The Mongolz <\/b>are writing the history books with every consecutive win. No other <\/span>East Asian team<\/b> has stayed inside the <\/span>HLTV Top 10<\/b> for more than a week. The Mongolz have been within the <\/span>Top 10 for 20 weeks<\/b> now, with more to come. As of the time of writing this, The Mongolz just lost their S-Tier LAN Playoff streak, which was at 4 consecutive events\u2014their best streak ever and the best of any East Asian team in the modern era (since CS:GO). The playoff streak started at the <\/span>Perfect World Shanghai Major<\/b> and continued to<\/span> IEM Katowice<\/b>,<\/span> PGL Cluj-Napoca<\/b>, and <\/span>ESL Pro League Season 21<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

What is quite surprising is that they had only ever once been in 2 S-tier LAN Playoffs, which was a softball 16-team playoff at <\/span>ESL Pro League Season 19 <\/b>and <\/span>Yalla Compass<\/b>. Even though they won Yalla Compass, these 2 events are not even close to the same caliber as any of the 4 they were making deep finishes at.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"The<\/p>\n

East Asia\u2019s Recorded Past<\/strong><\/h2>\n

It\u2019s important to distinguish that, when speaking of The Mongolz\u2019s greatness, they are paving the way for East Asia.<\/span><\/p>\n

East Asia includes China, Japan, Mongolia, North Korea, South Korea, and Taiwan. There has never been a significant North Korean or Taiwanese team<\/span> since 2014 <\/b>and, as far as I know, ever. This leaves 4 countries that have competed at any significant level in Counter-Strike: Global Offensive or CS2.<\/span><\/p>\n

TYLOO<\/b> led the way for China for some time as the only other East Asian team to peak at <\/span>#10 on HLTV in 2018<\/b>. They were only in the Top 10 for a<\/span> single week<\/b> and have fallen since, not having been within the Top 20 ranked teams since <\/span>December 2019<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"The<\/p>\n

Other notable Chinese teams include<\/span> Vici.CyberZen<\/b>, who held the 2nd highest ranking, having peaked at <\/span>#19<\/b> in O<\/span>ctober of 2016<\/b>. <\/span>Rare Atom<\/b> peaked at<\/span> #22<\/b> in <\/span>August of 2022<\/b>. <\/span>Lynn Vision<\/b> and<\/span> Vici Gaming <\/b>both peaked at <\/span>#23<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

The most well-known and successful South Korean-led CS:GO team was <\/span>MVP PK,<\/b> who hit <\/span>#23<\/b> twice<\/b>\u2014once for a week in <\/span>2018<\/b> and once in<\/span> 2019.<\/b> This roster featured the legendary Korean duo of <\/span>glow<\/b> and <\/span>solo<\/b>, who played for<\/span> WeMade FOX<\/b>, winning the CS 1.6 <\/span>World eSports Masters <\/b>in <\/span>2010<\/b>, an S-Tier LAN, defeating <\/span>SK Gaming<\/b>, <\/span>Frag eXecutors<\/b>, and <\/span>Evil Geniuses <\/b>along the way. Taking down names like<\/span> fRoD<\/b>, <\/span>n0thing<\/b>, <\/span>TaZ<\/b>, <\/span>NEO<\/b>, and <\/span>Delpan<\/b> was arguably all part of East Asia\u2019s greatest achievement in any version of Counter-Strike for over a decade, and it may still be. Had the HLTV World Ranking been established by then, they likely would have been in the elite tier, a top 5 team. One of the WeMade FOX players, peri, did hit<\/span> #17<\/b> on<\/span> HLTV\u2019s Top 20 in 2010<\/b>, the highest achievement of any individual from East Asia in any version of Counter-Strike.<\/span><\/p>\n

The best Japanese team in CS:GO was <\/span>SCARZ Absolute<\/b>, peaking at <\/span>#59<\/b>. I would say that their biggest achievement was taking down <\/span>Renegades <\/b>(<\/span>#12 <\/b>at the time) in a Best of 1 at the <\/span>Asia Minor<\/b> in <\/span>2018<\/b>, although they did not advance to the <\/span>FACEIT Major<\/b>, losing out in the playoffs. Funnily, I watched them play in person in Tokyo at <\/span>GALLERIA GAMEMASTER Cup 2018<\/b>, where they took down the second-most notable Japanese team,<\/span> Ignis <\/b>(mostly known for having the player <\/span>RIPablo Escobar<\/b>).<\/span><\/p>\n

\"The<\/p>\n

There had been various other Mongolian teams that competed at a solid Tier 2 level, notably a previous iteration of The Mongolz with <\/span>Zilkenberg<\/b> and <\/span>Machinegun<\/b>, which peaked at <\/span>#24 <\/b>in the world. <\/span>maaRaa <\/b>was the coach of this roster. He also sometimes played for them. Let\u2019s just say there was a lot of <\/span>shuffling<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

There have only been <\/span>3 teams in history<\/b> that broke into the <\/span>HLTV Top 20 teams<\/b> for any span of time from East Asia: <\/span>Vici.CyberZen<\/b>,<\/span> TYLOO<\/b>, and <\/span>The Mongolz.<\/b> (A reminder that the HLTV Top 20 has only been kept as a record since <\/span>October of 2014<\/b>.)<\/span><\/p>\n

The Mongolz are the only team to get into the single-digit ranking range for East Asian teams.<\/b><\/p>\n

Central Asia Distinction<\/strong><\/h3>\n

You may have noticed by now that I consistently refer to<\/span> East Asian<\/b>, <\/span>not Asian<\/b>. There is an important distinction to be made: <\/span>Kazakh-majority teams have entered the Top 5 before<\/b>. The most notable example was <\/span>Avangar <\/b>hitting <\/span>#3 <\/b>on HLTV\u2019s ranking following their<\/span> StarLadder Berlin 2nd place finish<\/b>. As many know, I do prefer to sensationalize my tweets\u2014especially in hot takes\u2014but this time in written form I have to be the \u201cbut actually\u201d guy lest I compromise the legitimacy of this article.<\/span><\/p>\n

Checkmate Beginnings, bLitz, Techno, and maaRa<\/strong><\/h2>\n

bLitz <\/b>entered the HLTV rankings in <\/span>February of 2020<\/b> under the lineup <\/span>Checkmate<\/b>, with 4 other Mongolian players. Checkmate qualified for the<\/span> Perfect World League <\/b>quickly after formation. However, the player <\/span>Kaine<\/b> slammed his hand in celebration and broke it. Out of sheer desperation, Checkmate welcomed <\/span>Techno4k<\/b>, who was only <\/span>15 <\/b>at the time in <\/span>2020<\/b>, and the pair of<\/span> bLitz and Techno have not separated since<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"The<\/p>\n

The team toiled around in various Asian leagues and qualifiers to a bit of success by Tier 2 standards in the Perfect World League, even winning an online Bo3 versus <\/span>Vici<\/b> (#58<\/b> in the world at the time), the eventual winners of the league. They even took a map off of <\/span>TYLOO<\/b>, but Checkmate eventually finished in<\/span> 6th place <\/b>of a possible 10 positions in the league.<\/span><\/p>\n

In <\/span>July of 2021<\/b>, maaRaa joined as the coach, and the trio of bLitz, Techno, and maaRa went on to pull off a stunning upset in the <\/span>Asia RMR Open Qualifiers<\/b>. In the <\/span>Grand Finals<\/b>, they faced off against <\/span>Rare Atom <\/b>(<\/span>#81<\/b>) with <\/span>kaze<\/b>, <\/span>Mercury<\/b>, <\/span>aumaN<\/b>, and <\/span>advent<\/b>. In a <\/span>2-0 victory<\/b>, they qualified for the<\/span> Asia RMR<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Within 10 days of qualifying for the RMR, they were signed to<\/span> IHC<\/b>, an esports organization backed by the cryptocurrency of the same name.<\/span><\/p>\n

World Renown Under IHC\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Just 6 weeks later, in <\/span>April of 2022<\/b>, they did the unthinkable. As the lowest-ranked team entering the Asia RMR at <\/span>#78,<\/b> IHC went on to defeat heavy favorites <\/span>TYLOO<\/b> and massive favorites <\/span>Renegades<\/b>. They won both series back to back, without dropping a map.<\/span><\/p>\n

Both Techno and bLitz were in the <\/span>5 highest-performing players at an event<\/b> that was loaded with players who were well-versed in international competition, such as <\/span>Liazz<\/b> (Australian), <\/span>BnTeT<\/b> (Indonesian), and <\/span>Attacker <\/b>(Chinese).<\/span><\/p>\n

\"The<\/p>\n

The dream did come to a crashing halt, however, once they entered the Major. They were only able to defeat the same Renegades team and lost the other 3 matches they had.<\/span><\/p>\n

However, this provided valuable experience which they used as a springboard to begin dominating their local region. In the following 15 events, primarily East Asian leagues and qualifiers, they only failed to reach qualification or top 2 twice. They found consistency in a scene that was often cited as being the most random when it comes to regional play.<\/span><\/p>\n

In the following Asia RMR for the<\/span> IEM Rio Major<\/b>, they once again came in poorly ranked. People were aware of their ability at this point, so it was less of a surprise but still impressive to see their consistency translate to qualifying for Counter-Strike\u2019s premier event once again.<\/span><\/p>\n

At IEM Rio, they crashed out in 2nd-to-last place with only a single win over<\/span> Brazilian <\/span>00Nation<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Becoming The Mongolz<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Due to the founders of the IHC cryptocurrency getting arrested, the IHC players reformed under <\/span>The Mongolz<\/b> banner, reviving a legendary Mongolian brand. <\/span>Techno<\/b>,<\/span> bLitz<\/b>, and<\/span> maaRaa <\/b>moved over to the new lineup.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"The<\/p>\n

Under The Mongolz banner, the lineup was able to once again qualify through the RMR. This time it was for the <\/span>BLAST Paris Major in 2023<\/b>, the final CS:GO Major.<\/span><\/p>\n

As the Counter-Strike community said goodbye to CS:GO, The Mongolz said goodbye to 3 of their players: <\/span>Bart4k<\/b>, <\/span>ANNIHILATION<\/b>, and<\/span> hasteka<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Despite qualifying for 3 consecutive Majors, maaRa, Techno, and bLitz decided to part ways with other consistent Mongolian forces and added<\/span> 910<\/b> and <\/span>mzinho <\/b>just 3 weeks after their 3rd Major defeat. Funnily, 15-year-old mzinho was replacing his brother Bart4k on the team.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"The<\/p>\n

910 was a huge risk<\/b>. At the time he was recruited, his primary Steam account had <\/span>under 3,000 hours of play <\/b>in CS:GO. For reference, most professional players today have<\/span> over 15,000 hours<\/b>. <\/span>donk <\/b>had <\/span>over 12,000<\/b> when he joined <\/span>Spirit<\/b>, his first tier one team. 910 was found playing in LAN caf\u00e9 10-man matches. This was a gigantic leap of faith by The Mongolz core.<\/span><\/p>\n

Senzu<\/b> came from Team <\/span>NKT<\/b> after a peculiar incident. He was involved in a skin-stealing scandal. <\/span>BnTeT<\/b>\u2019s tweet reads:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhat actually happened is that he gambled our skins that we lent to him and subsequently lost them. He then attempted to lie to us and avoid paying us back.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/div><\/blockquote>\n

Regardless of this, he\u2019s been making waves as<\/span> The Mongolz\u2019s best player<\/b> since.<\/span><\/p>\n
