Part 1: The Legacy<\/span><\/h2>\n

From the very dawn of professional Counter-Strike, a number of countries have always been proudly represented not only by their shining individuals, but also by their remarkable national teams and unique identities: the Danes and Swedes with their intelligent, calm, and innovative style of play, the Germans with their precision, revolutionary utility, and fundamentals, Brazil with its flamboyance and strong leaders, the entire Eastern European region with its undeniable work ethic and drive. And then there was one more\u2014the scene that dominated <\/span>Counter-Strike: Source <\/b>and gave birth to players who possessed just about the right amount of brilliance, passion, and pure skill to break the game in many ways.<\/span><\/p>\n

The year is<\/span> 2013<\/b>, and <\/span>J\u00f6nk\u00f6ping <\/b>is hosting the<\/span> first-ever Counter-Strike: Global Offensive Major tournament<\/b>\u2014<\/span>DreamHack Winter 2013<\/b>. In an era ruled by Scandinavian CS, <\/span>Sweden<\/b>, with its undeniable dominance thanks to hegemons like <\/span>Fnatic <\/b>and <\/span>NiP<\/b>, was the country with the highest number of representatives\u2014<\/span>21<\/b>. <\/span>Denmark<\/b>, with <\/span>n!faculty<\/b>, <\/span>SK<\/b>, and <\/span>Reason Gaming<\/b>, was second with <\/span>17<\/b>. Then there was <\/span>France<\/b> with <\/span>12<\/b>. The scene that had more than dominated CS: Source brought in three teams, two of which (<\/span>Recursive eSports<\/b> and <\/span>VeryGames<\/b>) made the playoffs. With young stars like <\/span>apEX<\/b>,<\/span> kioShiMa<\/b>, <\/span>kennyS<\/b>, <\/span>NBK-<\/b>, <\/span>shox<\/b>, <\/span>SmithZz<\/b>, and minds like <\/span>Happy<\/b>\u2014plus the Belgian support of <\/span>Ex6TenZ<\/b> and <\/span>ScreaM<\/b>\u2014the French scene was<\/span> thriving<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"Part<\/p>\n

They might\u2019ve had to wait until<\/span> DreamHack Winter 2014<\/b> for <\/span>Team LDLC<\/b>, led by <\/span>Happy<\/b>, to win <\/span>France\u2019s first CS:GO Major<\/b> but with the <\/span>2015 Cluj-Napoca Major title<\/b> for<\/span> Team EnVyUs <\/b>& the 3 French team appearances across the<\/span> first 7 Major finals<\/b>, French Counter-Strike was undeniably in its \u201c<\/span>Golden era<\/span><\/i>\u201d, with the trio of <\/span>Happy<\/b>, <\/span>NBK- <\/b>and <\/span>kioShiMa <\/b>leading the parade. These defining years will always be remembered by every French fan.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sadly, from that point on, things started to slowly go <\/span>downhill<\/b>. In fact, Cluj-Napoca 2015 was the<\/span> last time<\/b> a team with a core of three or more French players attended a Major final. There were attempts: after EnVyUs and LDLC\u2019s respective fade-aways, <\/span>G2 Esports <\/b>became the new home for French superstars, with over ten different players joining the organization between <\/span>2016<\/b> and <\/span>2019<\/b>, when G2 took a turn and brought in the Balkan duo<\/span> huNter-<\/b> and <\/span>nexa<\/b> in pursuit of expanding its options for players on the international market.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"Part<\/p>\n

The legacy was later carried by<\/span> Vitality<\/b>. Created in<\/span> October 2018<\/b>, Team Vitality\u2019s first French lineup consisted of <\/span>Happy<\/b>, <\/span>NBK-<\/b>, <\/span>RpK<\/b>, <\/span>apEX,<\/b> and the<\/span> wonderchild of French CS<\/b>\u201418-year-old <\/span>Mathieu \u201cZywOo\u201d Herbaut<\/b>. Vitality remained a French-speaking team for three years, and it would be a massive lie to say they did not have their moments. Yet, after making three Majors and not being able to surpass the \u201c<\/span>Quarter-Final hurdle<\/span><\/i>,\u201d changes seemed unavoidable. With the blockbuster signings of the <\/span>Astralis<\/b> trio\u2014<\/span>dupreeh<\/b>, <\/span>Magisk<\/b>, and <\/span>zonic<\/b>\u2014the \u201c<\/span>French era<\/span><\/i>\u201d of Vitality was officially over, even though the team was still represented by three Frenchmen. To this day, it still has the now two-time Major champion and legend of the game, Dan \u201capEX\u201d Madesclaire, and ZywOo at its helm.<\/span><\/p>\n

Over the next couple of years, there were numerous attempts to resuscitate the French scene with a fully French lineup. Legacy organizations like<\/span> LDLC<\/b>, <\/span>Heretics<\/b>, and <\/span>3DMAX<\/b>, as well as teams like <\/span>HEET<\/b>, <\/span>DBL Poney,<\/b> and even <\/span>Falcons<\/b>, tried multiple mixes with both newer and familiar names. Still, things did not seem to work as intended, leading to apEX and ZywOo being the <\/span>only two French players<\/b> taking part in the first CS2 Majors\u2014the <\/span>PGL CS2 Copenhagen Majors 2024<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Part 2: The Problem<\/span><\/h2>\n

What was\u2014and probably still is\u2014standing in the way of French Counter-Strike returning to its previous glory? Has the golden generation of talents like NBK-, shox, SmithZz, Happy, etc., simply faded away without leaving a trace? The transfer of knowledge between generations is always tricky in national teams, and there have been many attempts involving some of the aforementioned names, but not many succeeded. Meanwhile, games like <\/span>League of Legends<\/b>, <\/span>Valorant<\/b>, <\/span>Rocket League<\/b>, and<\/span> Fortnite<\/b> have been winning the hearts of young gamers in the country, which, as anyone might guess, has not necessarily helped the development of \u201cfresh blood\u201d in French CS. This means there are fewer and fewer prospects, leaving it up to the \u201cold guard\u201d to fight for greatness once again\u2014or, as we will be referring to <\/span>3DMAX<\/b> from here on out, \u201cThe Young Old Guard.\u201d These are players who, despite not being in their early twenties, are only now getting their first taste of Tier 1 Counter-Strike and are ready to<\/span> give it their all.<\/b><\/p>\n

\"Part<\/p>\n

Part 3: The Hope<\/span><\/h2>\n

After many years in the doldrums of online Counter-Strike, a new champion arose. Wandering among the above-mentioned teams for so long, a group of players formed the newest iteration of <\/span>3DMAX<\/b>. The<\/span> HEET<\/b> and<\/span> LF0 <\/b>quartet of <\/span>AWP<\/b> and<\/span> IGL Bryan \u201cMaka\u201d Canada<\/b>, <\/span>ex-G2 Esports player<\/b> and veteran <\/span>Lucas \u201cLucky\u201d Chastang<\/b>, and<\/span> sharpshooters Pierre \u201cEx3rcice\u201d Bulinge<\/b> and <\/span>Thomas \u201cDjoko\u201d Pavoni <\/b>was at the heart of the project. They were later joined by 20-year-old French talent and <\/span>ex-GenOne<\/b>, <\/span>Run&Kill<\/b>, <\/span>LDLC player Filip \u201cGraviti\u201d Brankovic<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

The trio of <\/span>Djoko<\/b>, <\/span>Ex3rcice<\/b>, and <\/span>Lucky<\/b> instantly caught the writer\u2019s eye. Their versatility\u2014how they all seemed able to fit into any position and role\u2014makes 3DMAX incredibly <\/span>hard to read and counter,<\/b> while individually they are difficult for most Tier 2 teams to match. Lucky\u2019s desire to prove himself once again after his unsuccessful stint with G2 in 2018\/19 and Ex3rcice\u2019s raw mechanical ability and willingness to put his body, stats, and pride on the line for the team were obvious.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"Part<\/p>\n

What can one say about <\/span>Maka<\/b>? A player who has always been known as a great leader and competitor in the French scene, but who had never before hit the level he reached in<\/span> 2024<\/b>. One of the biggest concerns about the 27-year-old marksman was\u2014and probably still is\u2014his ability to hold his own on LAN. However, 2024 provided a turning point in his career that seemed to change things. On <\/span>May 8, 2024<\/b>, Maka and 3DMAX faced off against\u2014and lost to\u2014G2 Esports in the second playoff round of <\/span>ESL Pro League S19<\/b>. For Maka, this game was a proving ground, an opportunity to show himself and the world that he can hit hard, and when he does, he\u2019s incredibly difficult to handle. Leading 3DMAX to a map win and going toe-to-toe with one of the best teams in the world at that time made Maka even more confident in his hyper-aggressive AWPing style.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cHis style can be risky, but it\u2019s also what makes him so dangerous. When he\u2019s confident, he\u2019s a real threat. Bodyy\u2019s arrival is likely pushing him even more and I have faith in him\u201d, <\/i><\/b>said French Commentator & Streamer \u2013 Alexis \u201caunni\u201d Dorey.<\/p><\/div><\/blockquote>\n

Then there was the duo from <\/span>GenOne<\/b>\u2014<\/span>Gravity<\/b> and<\/span> wasiNk<\/b>. Growing up as an IGL, Gravity was many French fans\u2019 hope of finding \u201c<\/span>the next apEX<\/span><\/i>\u201d. A player who never backs down and possesses a true warrior\u2019s mentality, proudly showcasing it both inside and outside the server. He would gladly do the \u201cdirty work\u201d in the team and is always eager to learn and listen, but also keen to keep the team\u2019s energy intact\u2014even if it means saying some not-so-nice things to the opposition\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n

\"Part<\/p>\n

The team adopted a new way of thinking\u2014<\/span>team first, positive, sincere, and emotional <\/b>in the best way possible\u2014thanks to the arrivals of both Gravity and wasiNk, who, despite not achieving much as a player, had enough experience to develop a great mind for the game and for what a team should look like.<\/span><\/p>\n

Not only did this squad play <\/span>eight LAN events <\/b>in <\/span>2024<\/b>, but they also participated in two consecutive editions of <\/span>ESL Pro League<\/b>\u2014making the<\/span> playoffs<\/b> in one\u2014qualified for the<\/span> IEM Cologne Play-In<\/b>, played in two RMRs, and, most importantly, <\/span>became the first French-speaking team since Vitality and G2 Esports<\/b> to qualify for a Counter-Strike Major after beating <\/span>Sashi<\/b>, <\/span>Heroic<\/b>, and<\/span> Passion UA <\/b>at the <\/span>Perfect World Shanghai Major 2024 RMR<\/b>. Yet, even that did not seem <\/span>enough<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

With 3DMAX on the rise and seemingly ready for an even more successful <\/span>2025<\/b>, it felt like the team was on an upward trajectory. Then the change happened. Replacing a key player like Djoko with the 28-year-old veteran and <\/span>ex-Fnatic<\/b>,<\/span> Falcons<\/b>,<\/span> LDCL,<\/b> and <\/span>G2 Esports<\/b> player <\/span>Alexandre \u201cbodyy\u201d Pienaro<\/b> felt like a bolt from the blue\u2014the kind of move that either helps a team surpass its limits or completely kills its momentum and development. It is safe to say that the staff and players took a big chance by bringing in bodyy, but as the French say, \u201c<\/span>Battre le fer pendant qu\u2019il est chaud<\/span><\/i>\u201d\u2014or, \u201c<\/span>Strike the iron while it is hot.<\/span><\/i>\u201d When the team is showing progress and is hot on its heels, bring in another active element: an experienced figure who can IGL if needed and who, during his stay in the French Falcons, was considered one of the best\u2014if not the best\u2014French players outside Tier 1. He could hardly be blamed for the lack of success of a Fnatic roster that never seemed to click on any level.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"Part<\/p>\n

With that being said, 3DMAX is still<\/span> far from becoming a consistent Tier 1 contender <\/b>and reaching the heights of the French Vitality or the \u201cG2 French Superteam,\u201d but it is already well ahead of many other French projects in the last seven years. <\/span>PGL Cluj-Napoca 2025 <\/b>was truly a trial by fire for bodyy and company, and the<\/span> loss against<\/b> SAW<\/b> in the 2-2 bracket Main Swiss game was not ideal. Still, making it to the second stage of ESL Pro League while <\/span>beating teams like Heroic<\/b>,<\/span> Eternal Fire<\/b>, and <\/span>Falcons shows promising signs<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Moreover, with the team getting more chances to participate in LAN events, courtesy of its <\/span>#11 p<\/b>osition in the <\/span>Valve World Ranking<\/b>, the future is <\/span>undeniably exciting <\/b>for this new iteration of 3DMAX. And yet, the story does not end there: the love for the game that spurs the creation of teams like <\/span>NBK<\/b> and afro\u2019s <\/span>Mercenaries<\/b>; the struggle and hard work of <\/span>JACKZ <\/b>and <\/span>GenOne;<\/b> the undeniable potential of what could be the next big French Counter-Strike superstar in <\/span>Ryan \u201cNeity\u201d Aubry<\/b> (<\/span>ENCE<\/b>); and the rising interest of organizations like <\/span>Gentle Mates<\/b> and <\/span>Karmine Corp <\/b>are all good signs that we may be witnessing the dawn of \u201c<\/span>The French CS2 Revolution<\/b><\/em>\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
