Over the course of the 9th elite Counter-Strike 2 event of the year \u2014 <\/span>PGL Astana<\/a> \u2014 many changes and storylines caught the attention of audiences worldwide. From Brazilian, Kazakhstani, and Latvian fans uniting over their love for the new-look <\/span>YEKINDAR<\/b>\u2013 and <\/span>molodoy<\/b>-powered<\/span> FURIA<\/b>, to <\/span>NIP<\/b>\u2019s first steps toward resurrection, and even<\/span> G2<\/b>\u2019s \u201cPolish era\u201d with <\/span>hades<\/b>, <\/span>TaZ<\/b>, and <\/span>Snax<\/b> playing on the same lineup.<\/span><\/p>\n

However, one tale fascinated and captured everyone who had their eyes set on the $1,250,000 event: the story of a captain whose sole mission was rescuing a wrecked, sinking ship \u2014 even as his own career seemingly dashed toward the bottom of the sea. And, of course, he is Danish.<\/span><\/p>\n

Throughout the history of the professional CS:GO\/CS2 scene, we\u2019ve seen multiple examples of captains rising from the dead and finding unexpected success in their late 20s or early 30s, regardless of being written off by many.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ironically, <\/span>Casper \u201ccadiaN\u201d M\u00f8ller<\/b> was 25 and had been playing professionally for over six years without reaching great heights when he joined <\/span>Heroic<\/b> and began forging his legacy in 2020. A similar moment can also be found in the career of one of the game\u2019s greatest captains \u2014 <\/span>Finn \u201ckarrigan\u201d Andersen<\/b>. At 28, the legendary IGL had failed to accomplish the main goal of the olofmeister, <\/span>NiKo<\/b>,<\/span> rain<\/b> & <\/span>GuardiaN FaZe Clan<\/b> lineup \u2014 to win a Major. That failure ended his stint with the team. After a strange, one-month tenure with <\/span>Envy<\/b>, karrigan returned to <\/span>MOUZ<\/b>, lifted four trophies, and earned his way back to FaZe \u2014 where he would finally win his first Major, as well as IEM Katowice, Cologne, and a Grand Slam.<\/span><\/p>\n

Another \u2014 and perhaps the most accurate \u2014 comparison to \u201cour protagonist\u2019s story\u201d is that of<\/span> Marco \u201cSnappi\u201d Pfeiffer<\/b>. An IGL who had been playing CS:GO since its inception, but wouldn\u2019t start making waves until he turned 31 and joined<\/span> ENCE<\/b> \u2014 the team that turned Snappi into the respected and recognized leader he is today.<\/span><\/p>\n

With that said, the man this article is about is one of the most controversial IGLs in modern-day Counter-Strike \u2014 but not because of his behavior, character, or anything else. Simply because it\u2019s just as easy to like as it is to detest the fact he\u2019s still around the Tier 1 scene \u2014 <\/span>Rasmus \u201cHooXi\u201d Nielsen<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"HooXi\u2019s<\/p>\n

The Start<\/strong><\/h2>\n

HooXi\u2019s early career was largely unremarkable. Starting professionally at age 20 on <\/span>myXMG<\/b>, he moved through many different squads over the next four years \u2014 playing with names like<\/span> BERRY<\/b>, <\/span>raalz<\/b>, <\/span>Farlig<\/b>, and <\/span>roej<\/b>. <\/span>Ambush<\/b> was the first established Danish banner he represented, but like many of his projects, it didn\u2019t last long. Some might find it surprising, but even HooXi\u2019s first stint with <\/span>Copenhagen Flames<\/b> didn\u2019t work out. In fact, it took him three attempts.<\/span><\/p>\n

HooXi first joined CPH Flames in 2018, alongside <\/span>Basso<\/b>, <\/span>Farlig<\/b> (future <\/span>Astralis <\/b>AWP),<\/span> roej <\/b>(who would remain with the Flames for years), and current <\/span>MOUZ<\/b> Head Coach <\/span>sycrone<\/b>. One year and some roster changes later, HooXi was benched. He spent three months with <\/span>AGF<\/b> before returning \u2014 now to a completely different lineup. This stint lasted just four months before he, along with <\/span>refrezh<\/b>, <\/span>Queenix<\/b>, and <\/span>Nodios<\/b>, left for <\/span>x6tence<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Then came <\/span>MAD Lions <\/b>\u2014 HooXi\u2019s first team that came close to making real waves. Alongside <\/span>acoR<\/b>, <\/span>refrezh<\/b>, <\/span>roeJ<\/b>, and <\/span>sjuush<\/b>, MAD Lions looked exciting. HooXi was still the \u201cunder 1.00 rating merchant,\u201d but his willingness to sacrifice for the team was clear. After strong performances at <\/span>Flashpoint Season 2<\/b> and wins over<\/span> Dignitas<\/b> (<\/span>friberg<\/b> & <\/span>f0rest<\/b>), <\/span>fnatic<\/b> (<\/span>JW<\/b> & <\/span>KRIMZ<\/b>), and<\/span> Envy<\/b>, MAD Lions appeared to be a fresh, competitive Danish team not built from ex-North, OpTiC, or Heroic rosters.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"The<\/p>\n

But again, it didn\u2019t last. Just five months later, HooXi was benched again. Yet this time, a real breakthrough was coming.<\/span><\/p>\n

Zyphon, nicoodoz, roeJ, jabbi, and HooXi \u2014 this was the lineup of his third tenure at Copenhagen Flames, and it proved the most successful. The Danish team became a force in online Counter-Strike and excelled in RMRs. Beginning with the<\/span> IEM Fall<\/b> (<\/span>PGL Stockholm Major RMR<\/b>) Open Qualifier, HooXi led them through to the <\/span>Legends Stage of the 2021 Stockholm Major<\/b> \u2014 all while posting a highest event rating of just <\/span>0.96<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

The team had firepower, and HooXi had a knack for finding ways to help his teammates thrive. Despite his individual struggles, the team won when it mattered. At 26, the Dane made his first Major appearance; at 27, he reached his first playoffs at th<\/span>e PGL Antwerp Major 2022<\/b> \u2014 posting a<\/span> 0.76<\/b> rating over <\/span>12 maps<\/b>. But what mattered most was that he led a Danish underdog, who couldn\u2019t even dominate Tier 2, to a <\/span>Top 8 Major finish<\/b>. And that counted for something.<\/span><\/p>\n

Age of Samurai<\/strong><\/h2>\n

G2 Esports<\/b> was the pinnacle of HooXi\u2019s career. From being the underdog in a Danish lineup with old friends and youngsters, HooXi suddenly became the<\/span> IGL <\/b>of a team with one of the greatest riflers of all time in <\/span>NiKo<\/b>, world-class players like <\/span>jks<\/b> and <\/span>huNter-<\/b>, and the prodigy from NAVI Junior \u2014 <\/span>Ilya \u201cm0NESY\u201d Osipov<\/b>. Expectations were higher, stakes larger, and all eyes were on the 27-year-old Dane making his Tier 1 debut. And he delivered.<\/span><\/p>\n

Over two years with G2, HooXi played <\/span>29 events<\/b> \u2014 26 of them on LAN \u2014 and <\/span>never reached a 1.00 rating at a single one<\/b>. His stats made him look silly, unrefined, simply not good enough for Tier 1. But numbers often don\u2019t tell the full story. Despite his personal struggles, HooXi proved himself a true captain \u2014 someone who\u2019d throw himself into the fire, sacrifice, compromise, and work for one thing only: the team\u2019s greater good. And in a way, it worked.<\/span><\/p>\n

Two years. Three trophies. But they mattered. Starting with the<\/span> BLAST World Finals<\/b> in 2022, G2 would go on to win both <\/span>IEM Katowice<\/b> and<\/span> IEM Cologne<\/b> in 2023. For a few months, they dominated. These victories helped make up for missing the<\/span> IEM Rio Major <\/b>in 2022 and the disappointing losses at the<\/span> BLAST Paris Major 2023 <\/b>and the <\/span>PGL Major Copenhagen<\/b> in 2024.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"Age<\/span><\/p>\n

But apparently, it wasn\u2019t enough. Sure, HooXi led G2 to some of the most significant non-Major trophies, but with NiKo and m0NESY in the lineup, the sense of unfulfilled potential lingered. That\u2019s likely why G2 removed HooXi in<\/span> July 2024<\/b> and replaced him with <\/span>Janusz \u201cSnax\u201d Pogorzelski<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

This article isn\u2019t about whether G2 made the right decision. Was HooXi part of G2\u2019s struggles? Maybe. But was he also someone who rarely got credit when the team won \u2014 even though he deserved it? Probably yes..<\/span><\/p>\n

To the Stars?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

June 13<\/b>, <\/span>2023<\/b> \u2014 that was the last game HooXi played for G2 Esports. Eleven months outside competition. Some open qualifiers with countrymen <\/span>birdfromsky<\/b> and <\/span>nicoodoz<\/b> \u2014 but no clear sign of a team picking him up. Then an opportunity appeared. The question was whether it was a chance at redemption, or the final nail in the coffin of his career.<\/span><\/p>\n

After missing its fifth consecutive CS Major, Astralis parted ways with in-game leader Casper \u201ccadiaN\u201d M\u00f8ller \u2014 weeks before rumors of the organization\u2019s financial crisis spread across the internet. Astralis\u2019 situation was dire: poor management, bad financial decisions, transfer misfires, and a lack of results \u2014 all threatening to undo one of CS\u2019s most expensive brands. Even Danish fans struggled to justify supporting the team anymore \u2014 and that says a lot. Yet they still had one more tournament before the season\u2019s end: <\/span>PGL Astana 2025<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

This is where our protagonist returns. HooXi had long been linked with<\/span> Astralis<\/b>. With strong firepower already in place, finding a true leader had been the organization\u2019s priority since <\/span>gla1ve<\/b>\u2019s departure. cadiaN got the first shot \u2014 even if it meant dropping the AWP and playing against his natural style.<\/span><\/p>\n

Now, it was finally HooXi\u2019s time. The opportunity could\u2019ve exposed him \u2014 proved he was out of touch and still individually poor \u2014 but it did quite the opposite.<\/span><\/p>\n

Under HooXi, Astralis looked revitalized \u2014 and so did he. The team had a leader who created space for <\/span>stavn<\/b>, <\/span>device<\/b>, <\/span>jabbi<\/b>, and <\/span>Staehr<\/b> \u2014 without needing to center calls around himself. Making your own moves on T-side helps understand the flow of a round and gives others their fair shot to shine.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"To<\/p>\n

For example, HooXi\u2019s initiative allowed Staehr to avoid constant self-sacrifice and have greater mid-round impact. That\u2019s just one reason why players around him were smiling \u2014 finally having fun, competing, and looking damn good on the server.<\/span><\/p>\n

Astralis didn\u2019t win the event, though they took a map off<\/span> Spirit <\/b>in the Bo5 Grand Final. But they made a statement. Wins over <\/span>Aurora<\/b>, <\/span>Natus Vincere<\/b>, <\/span>Virtus.pro<\/b>, <\/span>MIBR<\/b>, and <\/span>ODDIK <\/b>marked their first time looking like real contenders in 2025 \u2014 and HooXi was the reason.<\/span><\/p>\n

What\u2019s next for Astralis, the players, or HooXi? No one knows. But one thing is certain:<\/span><\/p>\n
