While <\/span>Team Vitality<\/b> has spent years carefully crafting a superteam, and <\/span>Team Falcons<\/b> is now pouring millions into building theirs, the idea of assembling elite players to form an unstoppable machine is not new. Many teams have tried this path before. Yet, oddly enough, few have succeeded in creating something that could last. Today, we revisit the first true CS:GO superteam: <\/span>Astana Dragon<\/b>s.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Trinity Before the Storm<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Back in 2013, CS:GO was still in its early days. There were no Majors, no skins, no stickers\u2014none of the elements that would later revolutionize the game and elevate it to esports glory. At the top of the scene stood two titans: <\/span>Ninjas in Pyjamas<\/b>, undefeated across 87 maps on LAN, built on a blend of Swedish 1.6 legends and CS:S renegades, and <\/span>VeryGames<\/b>, the French Source kings who were still chasing the Swedes\u2019 crown until <\/span>shox <\/b>joined mid-year.<\/span><\/p>\n

But before VeryGames could finally overcome NiP, another contender shook the throne. On <\/span>April 5, 2013<\/b>, <\/span>Virtus Pro <\/b>made history by defeating NiP on LAN, 16\u201314 and 16\u201310. Not only did they end the legendary streak\u2014they won the match and confirmed their dominance by beating them again two days later to claim the<\/span> StarLadder StarSeries V<\/b> title.<\/span><\/p>\n

The king had fallen. And the battlefield was set. VeryGames swapped <\/span>kennyS<\/b> for<\/span> Richard \u201cshox\u201d Papillon<\/b>. Virtus Pro added the deadly <\/span>GuardiaN<\/b>, replacing<\/span> AdreN<\/b>. And NiP found themselves hunted.<\/span><\/p>\n

\"The<\/p>\n

Though NiP took revenge at <\/span>DreamHack Summer<\/b>, they fell again to Virtus Pro just a week later at <\/span>EMS One Summer<\/b>. This time, it was VeryGames, fresh with shox, who came out on top.<\/span><\/p>\n

The months ahead promised a fierce rivalry. If NiP was rock, Virtus Pro was paper, and VeryGames the scissors\u2014a power trio battling for dominance as the first Major loomed on the horizon. But fate had something else in store.<\/span><\/p>\n

The CIS Earthquake<\/strong><\/h2>\n

On <\/span>July 18, 2013<\/b>, the CIS scene erupted. Despite being on top, <\/span>Virtus Pro <\/b>abruptly withdrew from CS:GO, citing unmet obligations by its players. Hours later, <\/span>Na\u2019Vi<\/b>, the legendary 1.6 organization, lost its star, <\/span>Yegor \u201cmarkeloff\u201d Markelov<\/b>. Rumors swirled: was the 2010 MVP leaving to join the ex-VP roster?<\/span><\/p>\n

Virtus Pro publicly accused their players of blackmail. The players fired back\u2014Virtus Pro had failed to meet its promises. <\/span>Dosia<\/b> even claimed there were never any contracts. The scene descended into chaos. And then, the dust settled.<\/span><\/p>\n

The very next day, <\/span>Ioann \u201cEdward\u201d Sukhariev<\/b>, another Na\u2019Vi legend, left the team. A new powerhouse was being born. Enter the <\/span>Astana Dragons<\/b>, formed by the <\/span>Kazakhstan E-Sports Federation<\/b>. The lineup:<\/span><\/p>\n

  • From Virtus Pro: <\/span>ANGE1<\/b> (IGL) and <\/span>Dosia<\/b> (star rifler)<\/span><\/li>\n
  • From Na\u2019Vi: <\/span>markeloff<\/b> (AWP) and <\/span>Edward<\/b> (star rifler)<\/span><\/li>\n
  • And from Kazakhstan: <\/span>AdreN<\/b>, the local hero<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    \"The<\/p>\n

    Firepower, experience, aura, talent\u2014they had it all. Fans were electrified. The mission was clear: dethrone NiP and VeryGames, and rule the CS:GO world.<\/span><\/p>\n

    Promise and Premature Cracks<\/strong><\/h2>\n

    But even the best-laid plans stumble. The Dragons\u2019 debut came against a fresh <\/span>fnatic<\/b> squad with a young and strong <\/span>JW<\/b>\u2014and they lost. Their early online run? Five defeats, just two wins. But offline mattered more. In a showmatch for the<\/span> TECHLABS Cup Kiev<\/b>, Astana Dragons struck back, defeating fnatic 2\u20131. Momentum was theirs.<\/span><\/p>\n

    Their first major test came at <\/span>DreamHack Bucharest<\/b>. NiP and VeryGames were in attendance. Astana found themselves in the same group as Na\u2019Vi. A perfect revenge arc. And<\/span> markeloff<\/b> delivered, tearing through his former team with a masterclass: 16\u201310.<\/span><\/p>\n

    They reached the semifinals. NiP, meanwhile, had fallen to fnatic in a fiery and controversial Swedish derby. Astana now faced the final boss: NiP. Win this, and the first title was within reach. It was a slugfest. But as always,<\/span> GeT_RiGhT<\/b> reigned supreme. NiP edged out a 2\u20131 win. A close call\u2014but surely the Dragons just needed time.<\/span><\/p>\n

    \"Promise<\/p>\n

    Next stop:<\/span> SLTV StarSeries VII Finals<\/b>. Rock-paper-scissors was back. Astana beat NiP twice. VeryGames beat Astana twice and took the title. Another lost opportunity.<\/span><\/p>\n

    At <\/span>ESWC<\/b>, just before the first Major, fortune seemed to finally smile. Though they lost to fnatic in groups, the bracket was generous\u2014no NiP, no VG, no fnatic. They easily dispatched <\/span>CPH Wolves<\/b> and faced a promising but beatable <\/span>Clan Mystik<\/b>, led by <\/span>HaRts<\/b>, a young and wild <\/span>apEX<\/b>, and a surprising\u2026 <\/span>KQLY<\/b>. But <\/span>KQLY<\/b> exploded, showing a 1.38 rating and obliterating Astana. He would go on to win the title the next day against VeryGames. A shocking upset, one that, in hindsight, carries a bitter aftertaste.<\/span><\/p>\n

    Edward Jumps Ship, and So Does the Dream<\/strong><\/h2>\n

    The mounting pressure, the missed titles, the failed honeymoon\u2014something had to give. <\/span>Edward<\/b>, one of the faces of the project, departed after just three and a half months. His replacement? <\/span>kucher<\/b>, a dependable fill-in from Virtus Pro days.<\/span><\/p>\n

    At the <\/span>TECHLABS Cup 2013 Finals<\/b>, they fell to Na\u2019Vi early but clawed through the lower bracket to win the tournament. Hope stirred.<\/span><\/p>\n

    Then came the big one: <\/span>DreamHack Winter 2013<\/b>\u2014the first ever Major. Expectations were low. In groups, they lost to <\/span>CPH Wolves<\/b>, but still made the playoffs. Once again, the bracket was in their favor. No NiP. No VG. No fnatic. Their opponents? The Americans of <\/span>compLexity<\/b>. A win was expected. But they fell short, knocked out in the quarterfinals. Another missed shot. The end felt near.<\/span><\/p>\n

    \"Edward<\/p>\n

    The final blow came at <\/span>StarLadder StarSeries VIII<\/b>.\u00a0 A shocking loss to <\/span>GamePub<\/b>, featuring a very young <\/span>NiKolinho<\/b>, followed by utter defeat at the hands of <\/span>Na\u2019Vi<\/b>, now powered by <\/span>GuardiaN<\/b> and\u2026 <\/span>Edward<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

    Astana Dragons finished dead last. Their dream? Over. And with that, the team disbanded. Because yes, Astana Dragons were already coming to an end. They had shattered <\/span>Na\u2019Vi\u2019s legendary core<\/b>, gutted Virtus Pro, and carried the weight of fan expectations. But they never lived up to the hype. The roster would linger under a new name\u2014<\/span>HellRaisers<\/b>\u2014but never won a top-tier tournament.<\/span><\/p>\n

    Ironically, two of its players would find redemption. In 2016, <\/span>Dosia<\/b> and <\/span>AdreN <\/b>joined <\/span>Gambit<\/b>, and in 2017, they lifted the <\/span>PGL Krak\u00f3w Major trophy<\/b>\u2014the one prize Astana Dragons could never reach.<\/span><\/p>\n

    The Curse of the Superteam<\/strong><\/h2>\n

    Astana Dragons weren\u2019t just a failed experiment\u2014they were a warning. The first true <\/span>CS:GO superteam<\/b> to fall short. And far from the last.<\/span><\/p>\n

    In 2015, <\/span>fnatic<\/b> picked up <\/span>dennis<\/b> for <\/span>Pronax<\/b>, hoping to pair leadership with unmatched firepower. The result? No Major trophies.<\/span><\/p>\n

    In 2017, the French scene finally united its prodigies\u2014<\/span>shox<\/b> and <\/span>kennyS<\/b> together at last. Expectations soared. But reality hit hard. No Major.<\/span><\/p>\n

    The same year, <\/span>FaZe<\/b> formed a galactic roster: <\/span>olofmeister<\/b>, <\/span>GuardiaN<\/b>, and <\/span>NiKo<\/b> on the same team. Paper-perfect. Major-less.<\/span><\/p>\n

    In 2018, <\/span>MIBR<\/b> tried to revive Brazilian dominance by adding <\/span>Stewie2K<\/b> and <\/span>tarik<\/b> to the old <\/span>SK core<\/b> of <\/span>FalleN<\/b>, <\/span>coldzera<\/b>, and <\/span>fer.<\/b> Result: more drama than titles.<\/span><\/p>\n

    And it didn\u2019t stop there. <\/span>Na\u2019Vi <\/b>spent years assembling the best players from the CIS region. Still no Major\u2014until the stars aligned in 2021.<\/span><\/p>\n

    G2<\/b>, with <\/span>NiKo<\/b>, <\/span>huNteR<\/b>, and rising phenom <\/span>m0NESY<\/b>, chased the same dream. So did countless others.<\/span><\/p>\n

    \"The<\/p>\n

    The blueprint was always the same: gather the biggest names, the best aimers, the most explosive talents\u2014and watch the trophies roll in. But Counter-Strike doesn\u2019t work like that.<\/span><\/p>\n

    It\u2019s not a game won on paper. It\u2019s not just about firepower, highlights, or flair. It\u2019s about structure, chemistry, trust, <\/span>teamwork<\/b>. The squads that won Majors, that carved their names into history, weren\u2019t just lineups of stars. They were <\/span>cohesive units<\/b>\u2014finely tuned machines where roles were clear, egos were managed, and synergy reigned.<\/span><\/p>\n
