Yet, this investment is necessary to achieve the ultimate form of competition: a<\/span><b> Major without Best-of-One (Bo1) matches<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Here are the reasons why Valve must urgently retire a format that has become obsolete in professional Counter-Strike.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>The End of Bo1 in Competitive CS<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over the years, in the quest for the best possible tournament format among different organizers (<\/span><b>EFG<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>BLAST<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>PGL<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><b>StarLadder<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), Bo1 has become completely obsolete. The last Bo1 played at Cologne (IEM) was during the 2023 Play-Ins. For several years, IEM had adopted a Group Stage in Bo3 format. Just before the 2024 IEM Cologne edition, ESL announced the end of the Bo1 format for its first competition phase.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/IEM?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#IEM<\/a> Cologne 2024 Tournament Update:<\/p>\n<p>After taking in player &amp; community feedback in to account we have made the decision to remove the BO1 format from <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/IEM?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#IEM<\/a> Cologne 2024.<\/p>\n<p>All BO1 games will now be replaced by BO3 series.<\/p>\n<p>Stay tuned for info regarding scheduling. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/SEGvW5CpoU\">pic.twitter.com\/SEGvW5CpoU<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 ESL Counter-Strike (@ESLCS) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ESLCS\/status\/1816481057971007566?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 25, 2024<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To find the last Bo1 played in an IEM competition, you have to go back to Rio in October 2024. Since then, ESL has dropped its bad habit of starting these tournaments with a Bo1\u2014more than a year after BLAST did.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-205374\" src=\"https:\/\/skin.club\/community\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/image-1-1-1.jpg\" alt=\"The End of Bo1 in Competitive CS\" width=\"1280\" height=\"720\" srcset=\"https:\/\/community.skin.club\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/image-1-1-1.jpg 1280w, https:\/\/community.skin.club\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/image-1-1-1-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/community.skin.club\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/image-1-1-1-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/community.skin.club\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/image-1-1-1-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1280px) 100vw, 1280px\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BLAST abandoned Bo1 in 2023 during the resumption of its BLAST Premier circuit. The last Bo1 was played at the Fall Groups in August 2022. This is no coincidence: organizers are seeking the best format for both competition and entertainment. Clearly, they have all concluded that Bo1 fails to check all the boxes and makes the competition less representative of the true level of teams.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2025, PGL, BLAST, and EFG have played no matches in their competitions as Bo1.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Best-of-Three: The Fair Format<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br>\n<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-205390\" src=\"https:\/\/skin.club\/community\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/image-2-1-1.jpg\" alt=\"Best-of-Three: The Fair Format\" width=\"1280\" height=\"720\" srcset=\"https:\/\/community.skin.club\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/image-2-1-1.jpg 1280w, https:\/\/community.skin.club\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/image-2-1-1-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/community.skin.club\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/image-2-1-1-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/community.skin.club\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/image-2-1-1-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1280px) 100vw, 1280px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For over five years, the world\u2019s top Counter-Strike teams have largely abandoned Bo1. This begs the question: why is this format still imposed, especially at the highest levels? Bo1 inherently introduces excessive variance\u2014one bad map, or even one bad side, can end the tournament hopes of a team that is objectively better. Bo3 matches dramatically reduce this randomness by:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Allowing teams to recover from a poor map performance<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rewarding teams with deeper map pools and better veto strategies<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Preserving the possibility of upsets while making them more remarkable<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2><strong>Aligning Format with Tournament Prestige<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eliminating Bo1 from Majors would require extending the event by three days\u2014one extra day for matches decided at <\/span><b>1-0<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><b>0-1<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in each stage of the tournament. While this increase in days raises production, accommodation, and staffing costs, it would enhance the prestige and competitive integrity of the event. Running Bo1 matches at this level is increasingly seen as unbefitting the top tier of esports, a view widely shared among pro players.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"article__media y-red-dif-4\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/DZ8LR78qx40?si=4E_s9fM7Aca8m742\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><b>Maciej \u201cF1KU\u201d Miklas (OG) <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">voiced this sentiment as early as 2022:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"custom-bq\"><div class=\"custom-bq-q\"><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I think having Best-of-one matches in tournaments like this is full bullshit\u2026 It\u2019s just really hard to recover even though you are the better team.<\/span><\/p><\/div><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More recently,<\/span><b> Dan \u201capEX\u201d Madesclaire (Vitality) <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bluntly criticized the Bo1 format during the BLAST Major in Austin:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"custom-bq\"><div class=\"custom-bq-q\"><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Best-of-one\u2026 that\u2019s just so fucking boring. It scares you to make mistakes\u2026 It\u2019s the most prestigious event, and Bo1 is a bit random\u2026 I hope it\u2019s going to be the last Major with Bo1s.<\/span><\/p><\/div><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adding to the argument is the transition to the <\/span><b>MR12<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> format. The shorter rounds magnify the impact of pistol rounds, economic cycles, clutches, and map side starts\u2014further increasing variance and making Bo1 even less suitable.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Conclusion<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Abandoning Bo1 matches is crucial to uphold the legitimacy of Counter-Strike\u2019s Majors. Though more costly and time-consuming, removing Bo1 reduces randomness and rewards consistent skill and strategy. The industry\u2019s leading organizers have already moved away from Bo1, and professional players overwhelmingly support this shift.
