After a tense three-map battle against 3DMAX, Falcons could finally breathe a sigh of relief \u2014 the team pulled off a hard-fought 2:1 victory to secure a spot in the semifinals of ESL Pro League Season 22. Team leader Nikola \u201cNiKo\u201d Kova\u010d didn\u2019t hide his mixed emotions after the match \u2014 frustration with his team\u2019s performance, yet pride for their resilience and ability to grind out a difficult win despite all the setbacks.<\/p>\n

In playoffs, it doesn\u2019t really matter how you win \u2014 what matters is that you make it through. We\u2019re a bit frustrated with how we played, but happy that we got the victory, NiKo said after the series, in which Falcons failed to win a single one of six pistol rounds but still prevailed in overtime on Nuke.<\/p><\/div><\/blockquote>\n

Surviving by inches \u2014 Falcons defeat 3DMAX<\/h3>\n

Copenhagen hosted one of the most intense playoff clashes of ESL Pro League Season 22, where Falcons narrowly escaped elimination after a 2:1 triumph over 3DMAX. The match was a rollercoaster from start to finish: after dropping Inferno, the team bounced back on Ancient thanks to m0NESY, who posted a stunning 1.96 rating, before sealing the deal in a nail-biting overtime finish on Nuke, earning their place in the final four.<\/p>\n

Despite the victory, Falcons looked shaky throughout the series \u2014 losing all six pistols and throwing away several 5v3 advantages. NiKo admitted that such inconsistency is something that personally frustrates him:<\/p>\n

We\u2019re making things harder for ourselves. We could win games comfortably, but instead we give up leads and put ourselves under pressure. It\u2019s frustrating because we know we\u2019re capable of much more, the Bosnian star said candidly.<\/p><\/div><\/blockquote>\n

The pistol problem: \u201cWe\u2019ve tried everything, but nothing works\u201d<\/h3>\n

One of the key reasons behind the team\u2019s shaky performance was once again their inability to win pistol rounds. Falcons lost all of them \u2014 now sitting at 12 out of 13 pistols lost across their last two series. NiKo openly admitted that the issue has become systemic.<\/p>\n

We don\u2019t really know what\u2019s going on. We\u2019ve tried simple setups, anti-strats, even more complex approaches \u2014 but maybe it just comes down to not hitting shots or taking the wrong duels. In MR12, losing pistols makes it so much harder; you\u2019re always starting with a disadvantage, he explained.<\/p><\/div><\/blockquote>\n

Communication under pressure<\/h3>\n

Falcons also lost several rounds despite having clear numerical advantages \u2014 5v3s and even 5v2s \u2014 a recurring problem in their recent matches. According to NiKo, much of it came down to 3DMAX\u2019s chaotic tempo and his team\u2019s communication lapses.<\/p>\n

We didn\u2019t lose rounds because of stupid mistakes \u2014 3DMAX just played incredibly fast. Everything happened within seconds, and we couldn\u2019t always react in sync. Our communication wasn\u2019t where it needs to be. It wasn\u2019t bad, but if we want to win tomorrow \u2014 it has to be much better, NiKo emphasized.<\/p><\/div><\/blockquote>\n

m0NESY\u2019s resurgence: \u201cThat\u2019s the player he should always be\u201d<\/h3>\n

NiKo also reflected on the resurgence of his young teammate, Ilya \u201cm0NESY\u201d Osipov, who delivered a standout performance in the quarterfinals and became the team\u2019s driving force.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m really happy he\u2019s back to his level. In practice, he\u2019s always incredible, but in official games he sometimes took a step back when someone else made the calls. We talked before the event, and now he\u2019s playing like the leader we know he can be \u2014 aggressive, active, unpredictable. That\u2019s the m0NESY everyone wants to see, NiKo said.<\/p><\/div><\/blockquote>\n

Inferno \u2014 Falcons\u2019 Achilles heel<\/h3>\n

Falcons once again fell short on Inferno, and NiKo admitted that the map remains their biggest weakness.<\/p>\n

We knew they\u2019d pick Inferno \u2014 it\u2019s their best map. We prepared well, but losing both pistols killed us. Against a team like 3DMAX, that\u2019s deadly. We\u2019re still adjusting with kyousuke playing on B, but he\u2019s improving fast. It\u2019s a process, he noted.<\/p><\/div><\/blockquote>\n

NiKo also ruled out any changes to the team\u2019s map pool for the rest of the season:<\/p>\n

No Overpass or any new maps \u2014 it\u2019s too late for that. We just need to make Inferno solid. We\u2019ve already improved since Belgrade and will keep working on it.<\/p><\/div><\/blockquote>\n

Looking ahead: \u201cI want to finally win a trophy with Falcons\u201d<\/h3>\n

Falcons now await the winner of MOUZ vs NAVI in the semifinals \u2014 and for NiKo, it\u2019s another chance to chase a long-awaited championship.<\/p>\n

We\u2019ve beaten both of these teams before. On paper, MOUZ are the stronger opponent, but if we focus on ourselves, we can beat anyone. We\u2019ve stopped in the semifinals twice already, and this time I want to go all the way. I want to finally lift my first big trophy with Falcons, NiKo concluded.<\/p><\/div><\/blockquote>\n

Falcons fought through chaos, nerves, and their own mistakes \u2014 but survived. Their play remains imperfect, yet NiKo\u2019s leadership and m0NESY\u2019s return to peak form are keeping the team afloat.
