Let\u2019s stop pretending everything is fine. The Valve Regional Standings system was supposed to bring structure and fairness to the Counter-Strike ecosystem. Instead, what we are seeing is exploitation, loopholes, and manipulation happening in plain sight. This is no longer a minor issue or an edge case, It is becoming the norm.<\/span><\/p>\n

On paper, VRS rewards performance across events and creates a transparent path to Major qualification. But what\u2019s happening in reality is far from it. It has turned into a system that rewards timing abuse, selective participation, and strategic dodging. Teams are actively gaming the system to squeeze out every possible advantage, even if it comes at the cost of competitive integrity.<\/span><\/p>\n

Changing regions at the last minute to have a better chance at qualification<\/h2>\n

The Liquid situation is a perfect example of how flawed the system has become. On March 12th 2026, Liquid were ranked 28th in Europe, and with just three weeks left for the Major Qualification cutoff date, their chances were looking bleak. However, swapping NertZ for malbsMd enabled them to switch their region to Americas. And due to limited competition in the region, they are now ranked 9th, well within reach to qualify for the region. It was not a clever move. It was a loophole being exploited.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

If a team can simply switch regions late in the cycle and benefit immediately, then the idea of regional competition becomes meaningless. Regional rankings are supposed to represent consistent participation and performance within that region, not opportunistic last-minute decisions. The fact that this is allowed shows that the rules are far too weak. There needs to be a longer lock-in period or a higher minimum requirement of matches played in a region before a team can benefit from it. Otherwise, region switching will continue to be abused.<\/span><\/p>\n

Partaking in multiple tournaments to gain last minute VRS points<\/h2>\n

Then there is the FaZe situation, which takes things to another level entirely. A team that was mathematically out of Major qualification suddenly finds a path back through what can only be described as system exploitation. They enter a relatively weak LAN event with very little top-tier competition, where several teams are unranked.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What follows makes it even worse. By not officially committing to certain events, they avoid the risk of losing points. At the same time, they position themselves to gain easy VRS points from beating weaker opponents. On top of that, they are forfeiting matches in a major event like PGL Bucharest without facing any real consequences, simply because the timing of that event does not affect the Major cutoff. So they avoid risk, gain easy points, and operate within a window where the system cannot punish them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Tournament win without playing matches<\/h2>\n

The Asian scene has also exposed some awkward flaws in VRS. Lynn Vision\u2019s win at Yuqilin Pinnacle of Battle Season 3 is a clear example. After a strong group stage, they advanced through the playoffs entirely via forfeits. Rare Atom forfeited their first match, TYLOO forfeited the upper bracket final, and then forfeited again in the grand final due to player health issues. As a result, Lynn Vision won the event without completing a single full map in the playoffs, yet still received full VRS points.<\/p>\n

There is no clear malicious intent here, especially with legitimate reasons like health issues involved, but the outcome still feels off. When a team can gain significant ranking points without actually playing through the most important matches, it highlights a gap in the system. It is also difficult to regulate since regional LANs are important for growth, but allowing such cases to impact rankings can set a bad precedent if it keeps happening.<\/p>\n

Regarding the RA forfeit, I think things have been blown out of proportion.<\/p>\n

The potential for abuse has always been a concern with the VRS system for me, however, having spoken to some members of RA, I do not believe that there was any ill intent on their part.<\/p>\n

The root issue is that any situation like this is open for a negative interpretation, which will only build a divide between regions\/fans who will bandwagon behind their teams.<\/p>\n

I would be in favour of a return of a RMR\/Minor style system for Asia, that way everyone has a fair chance at qualifying against the best teams.<\/p>\n

But now FaZe is abusing that rule in the opposite way, going against its original intention, essentially \u201ccheating\u201d the system because they know those two costly defeats will not count toward Major qualification. If you care about fair play, this is genuinely frustrating to watch. But technically, it still falls within the rules.<\/p>\n

Don\u2019t really get the point of VRS if infinite local LANs can be spawned just before the invite cutoff date. Just go back to using VRS to auto qualify the top 8 to the major and have local RMRs for the rest, would be much easier to follow.<\/p>\n

As much as I\u2019d prefer to have FaZe <\/span>at the <\/span>IEM Cologne<\/span> Major, you should not be able to abuse the VRS system like that by forfeiting matches at another LAN event. That hurts the integrity of the sport.<\/span><\/p>\n

Potential Fixes for the VRS system<\/h2>\n

A proper fix starts with fundamentally reworking how points are awarded, because the current system clearly overvalues timing and underweights actual competition. Region locks need to be significantly stricter, not something as minimal as playing five matches, but a longer commitment that prevents last-minute region switching from being viable.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Points should also not depend on whether an event finishes before the Major cutoff, as that creates obvious timing abuse; instead, all matches played before the cutoff should count toward rankings, regardless of when the event concludes. At the same time, the value of points from low-tier or weak events needs to be reduced so teams cannot farm easy wins for meaningful gains. More emphasis should be placed on the strength of opponents, with head-to-head results within the VRS carrying greater weight, ensuring that beating strong teams matters far more than simply accumulating wins against weaker competition.<\/span><\/p>\n

There have been a myriad of exploitations in the VRS that need to be addressed. Teams can selectively participate in weaker events to farm points while avoiding stronger tournaments where they risk losing ranking, effectively rewarding safe scheduling over real competition. There are also cases of strategic forfeits or match dodging, where teams minimize negative impact by exploiting cutoff timing. Additionally, low-tier events with questionable qualification structures or late invites can be used to gain easy points, while insufficient weighting of opponent strength allows teams to inflate rankings by beating weaker sides. Even minimum match requirements can be gamed, with teams doing just enough to qualify and then avoiding further risk.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
