The IEM Cologne Major 2026 represents one of the most important tournaments in Counter-Strike history. The Cathedral of Counter-Strike will once again host the world\u2019s elite, bringing together 32 teams from across Europe, the Americas, and Asia<\/span><\/p>\n

For South American fans, this year\u2019s Major carries a sense of optimism. The region enters Cologne with several teams capable of competing internationally and a stronger presence than many expected at the start of the season. Brazil alone has six representatives in the event, while Argentina\u2019s 9z also enters with realistic ambitions of reaching the latter stages of the tournament.<\/span><\/p>\n

While winning the entire Major remains an enormous challenge given the strength of teams such as Vitality, Falcons, NAVI, Spirit, and MOUZ, reaching the playoffs is a realistic objective for multiple South American organizations.<\/span><\/p>\n

The biggest question is simple: which teams are most likely to survive the Swiss stages and reach the LANXESS Arena?<\/span><\/p>\n

FURIA Enters as South America\u2019s Biggest Hope<\/b><\/h3>\n

There is little debate regarding the region\u2019s strongest contender.<\/span><\/p>\n

FURIA enters Cologne as the only South American team starting directly in Stage 3, a reward earned through its position in the Valve Regional Standings. This gives the Brazilian squad a significant advantage over every other team from the Americas. Instead of surviving two previous stages, FURIA only needs to navigate a single Swiss group to secure a playoff berth and will have more time to prepare and practice than the others.<\/span><\/p>\n

More importantly, FURIA has consistently shown it can compete against the world\u2019s elite.<\/span><\/p>\n

The roster featuring FalleN, KSCERATO, yuurih, YEKINDAR, and molodoy has developed into one of the most balanced lineups in international Counter-Strike. KSCERATO remains one of the highest-rated riflers in the world, while yuurih continues to provide consistency in high-pressure matches. The additions of YEKINDAR and molodoy have injected aggression and firepower into a lineup that was already built around experience and structure.<\/span><\/p>\n

It is true that their 2026 campaign hasn\u2019t been the greatest compared to the end of 2025, but still made it to the playoffs on the majority of the tournaments they participate in and always put up a great fight no matter who they compete against.<\/span><\/p>\n

What makes FURIA particularly dangerous is their versatility. Unlike previous versions of the team that often relied heavily on momentum and aggression, this lineup can win through structure, preparation, and tactical adjustments. Their map pool is deeper than it has been in years but still needs improvements, if they are able to bring overpass back to what it was last year together with a few tweaks on some of the other maps, they will for sure be one of the strongest teams out there and their experience in Major environments cannot be overstated.<\/span><\/p>\n

If any South American team is expected to reach the playoffs, it is FURIA.<\/span><\/p>\n

Legacy Could Be the Tournament\u2019s Surprise Package<\/b><\/h2>\n

Legacy may not receive the same level of international attention as FURIA, but the Brazilian squad enters Cologne with plenty of reasons for confidence. Especially after winning CS Asia Championship 2<\/span><\/p>\n

The team earned a Stage 2 invitation and has steadily improved throughout the season. Their roster combines experienced leadership with explosive individual talent, creating a lineup capable of upsetting stronger opponents on any given day. <\/span>A significant part of Legacy\u2019s ceiling revolves around dumau and latto. And it is extremely important to have arT comfortably calling as an IGL and Saadzin setting the pace as an awper which is something he often struggles against top opposition.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Dumau and latto have demonstrated the ability to take over matches individually, and their aggressive style can create problems for more methodical teams. When Legacy finds momentum, they often become one of the most entertaining teams on the server.<\/span><\/p>\n

However, that aggression can also be a weakness. Against highly disciplined opponents, overextensions and risky decisions can quickly become costly. <\/span>The key for Legacy will be maintaining balance. If they can combine their natural aggression with solid fundamentals, they possess enough talent to surprise observers and potentially reach Stage 3. <\/span>A playoff appearance would still be considered an upset, but reaching the final stage of the Major is absolutely within reach.<\/span><\/p>\n

paiN Gaming Arrives With Questions to Answer<\/b><\/h3>\n

While paiN Gaming remains one of South America\u2019s strongest representatives on paper, their path to a playoff appearance at IEM Cologne Major 2026 looks considerably more complicated than it did earlier in the season.<\/span><\/p>\n

For much of the past year, paiN established itself as one of Brazil\u2019s most consistent teams, earning respect through disciplined Counter-Strike and impressive international performances. However, recent results have exposed several concerns that could become significant obstacles in a tournament as demanding as Cologne.<\/span><\/p>\n

The most obvious issue is the team\u2019s map pool. <\/span>Against elite opposition, paiN has frequently found itself in uncomfortable veto situations, often entering series without enough confidence across multiple maps. While teams at the highest level are capable of winning on almost any battleground, paiN has struggled to demonstrate that same level of flexibility. In a Swiss format where preparation and adaptation are critical, predictable vetoes can quickly become a major disadvantage.<\/span><\/p>\n

The biggest challenge for paiN will be proving that they can overcome their recent inconsistency. If they can find stability early in the tournament and avoid unfavorable veto scenarios, a Stage 3 appearance remains realistic. However, based on current form, they enter Cologne with more question marks than confidence. <\/span>Among the South American contenders, paiN may have one of the widest ranges of outcomes. A deep run would not be shocking given the talent on the roster, but an early exit would be far less surprising than many would have predicted a few months ago.<\/span><\/p>\n

For years, 9z has been one of the most important organizations in South American Counter-Strike. <\/span>The Argentine organization continues to represent the region internationally and enters Cologne through Stage 2. Their lineup has repeatedly shown resilience and an ability to compete against teams from stronger regions. <\/span>What separates 9z from many underdog teams is experience.<\/span><\/p>\n

The organization has spent years competing internationally and understands the demands of major tournaments. Players such as dgt and max bring valuable experience that could prove crucial during elimination matches. But their biggest start last tournament was luchov, and for them to make it to further stages, having a star putting up great numbers is crucial.<\/span><\/p>\n

Like paiN and Legacy, the biggest obstacle is the format itself. Stage 2 is stacked with quality teams, and a few unfavorable matchups can dramatically alter a team\u2019s tournament trajectory. <\/span>Nevertheless, 9z possesses enough firepower to challenge for advancement.<\/span><\/p>\n

MIBR Faces the Toughest Road<\/b><\/h3>\n

Among the region\u2019s most recognizable organizations, MIBR arguably faces the most difficult journey. <\/span>The Brazilian squad begins in Stage 1, meaning they must survive three separate stages before reaching the playoffs. No South American team has a harder route. <\/span>That does not mean they should be overlooked.<\/span><\/p>\n

MIBR remains one of the most talented teams in the Americas, and recent domestic results have demonstrated their potential. Their young core possesses considerable mechanical skill and can overwhelm opponents when confidence is high. <\/span>The issue is consistency. <\/span>To reach the playoffs, MIBR would need to maintain a high level across multiple Swiss stages while facing increasingly difficult opponents. It is not impossible, but it is a significantly greater challenge than the paths available to FURIA, paiN, Legacy, or 9z.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sharks and Gaimin Gladiators Face an Uphill Battle<\/b><\/h3>\n

Among the South American representatives, Sharks and Gaimin Gladiators enter Cologne as clear underdogs. Both teams begin in Stage 1 and will need to navigate a difficult field just to reach Stage 2, making a playoff run an extremely challenging proposition.<\/span><\/p>\n

For Sharks, the primary objective should be gaining valuable experience and proving they can compete consistently against international opposition. The roster has shown flashes of potential throughout the season, but the jump in competition at a Major is significant, and depth across a long Swiss format remains a concern.<\/span><\/p>\n

Gaimin Gladiators find themselves in a similar position. While the team has several experienced players such as fer (two times Major Champion) their overall level has generally been below that of the region\u2019s top contenders. To make a deep run, they would likely need several standout performances and favorable matchups along the way.<\/span><\/p>\n

For both teams, simply advancing to Stage 2 would already represent a successful tournament. While playoff aspirations appear unrealistic, Cologne provides an opportunity to gain experience, test themselves against elite competition, and potentially pull off a few surprises along the way.<\/span><\/p>\n
