Luminosity\u2019s return to Counter-Strike was supposed to be one of the most exciting comeback stories of 2026. Less than two months later, it already looks like one of the strangest roster-building decisions of the year. The organization picked up four players from Monte \u2014 Rainwaker, Bymas, afro and AZUWU \u2014 immediately after a run to Stage 3 of the IEM Cologne Major. They received a proven core, valuable VRS points and Major momentum. There was only one problem: Luminosity took almost everything that made up Monte, but left the captain behind.<\/p>\n

Monte Were More Than Four Players<\/h3>\n

Before Luminosity entered the picture, Monte had quietly become one of the success stories of the first half of 2026. With Jack \u201cGizmy\u201d von Spreckelsen calling and Alexander \u201ckakafu\u201d Szymanczyk coaching, the roster won CCT Global Finals, reached the final of DraculaN Season 6, placed 9-11th at PGL Astana and then made Stage 3 of the Cologne Major. Monte had spent months building a working structure, with Gizmy leading it inside the server.<\/p>\n

Luminosity themselves clearly saw the Cologne run as proof that they were acquiring something that already worked. Steve Maida, Luminosity founder, in the organization\u2019s roster announcement:<\/p>\n

We believe fully in this team and their success at Cologne proved we bet right<\/p><\/div><\/blockquote>\n

That sentence aged quickly. The bet Luminosity believed Cologne had validated was not really on a five-man team. It was on four players from that team, with one of its most important structural pieces removed.<\/p>\n

Luminosity Wanted Two Different Projects at Once<\/h3>\n

According to lux, Luminosity\u2019s original plan was to create a new project around him from scratch. Then the opportunity to acquire the Monte core appeared, giving LG access to most of a roster that already carried a valuable ranking. lux himself explained that he was supposed to be the first piece of a new team before the option of taking an established core became available.<\/p>\n

So Luminosity tried to combine two different ideas: lux\u2019s project and Monte\u2019s established core. When Gizmy publicly reacted to the transfer, Maida explained why the British IGL was not part of the deal. Steve Maida, responding to Gizmy after the transfer:<\/p>\n

We had already bought lux first so it just wasn\u2019t possible<\/p><\/div><\/blockquote>\n

Contractually, the explanation is understandable. Competitively, it creates the central problem of the project. If Monte were attractive because the core already worked, why change the player responsible for calling its game? lux was not a ridiculous choice for a new team. His work with Legacy showed he could lead a competitive roster. But putting him in charge of four players who had just produced their best run under another IGL was a very different gamble.<\/p>\n

The Gizmy Story Was Even Messier<\/h3>\n

Gizmy said that he did not know his teammates had already committed to Luminosity while they were still competing together at the Major. Gizmy, after his departure from Monte:<\/p>\n

After the major, the core told me that they were leaving to LG, and had also signed contracts before the major<\/p><\/div><\/blockquote>\n

That means Monte were producing the best result of this roster\u2019s existence while its future had effectively already been decided \u2014 without the IGL being part of it. Gizmy described it as a sad ending for a team he had led from the beginning.<\/p>\n

The situation became even uglier in late August. Monte publicly criticized Bymas, afro and AZUWU over the circumstances of their departure, suggesting the organization and Gizmy had been kept in the dark while contract-extension talks were still taking place. Bymas responded with a much more serious accusation. Bymas, responding to Monte\u2019s accusations:<\/p>\n

Monte owes me tens of thousands of dollars<\/p><\/div><\/blockquote>\n

Bymas said payment delays had been a recurring issue and argued that re-signing would have meant committing to an organization the players no longer trusted. Monte disputed the scale of his claim, acknowledged that delays had happened and said players who broke contractual terms had been fined. The dispute explains why some players may have wanted to leave.<\/p>\n

But leaving Monte as an organization and abandoning the competitive system that had just worked are two different things. Luminosity could give the players a new home. What they could not automatically reproduce was the structure those players had developed with Gizmy.<\/p>\n

lux Explained the Real Problem Himself<\/h3>\n

The strongest evidence that Luminosity\u2019s issue is structural came from lux himself. After LG exited the Esports World Cup without a victory, the Brazilian IGL admitted that finding a common playing identity had been the hardest part of the project.<\/p>\n

lux, speaking to HLTV after Luminosity\u2019s EWC elimination:<\/p>\n

Sometimes I have a very clear vision of what needs to be done, and they have a different one<\/p><\/div><\/blockquote>\n

He clarified that neither side had to be wrong. That is exactly why the quote matters. Four players had spent months developing one understanding of Counter-Strike. Luminosity then put them under a captain with another vision and expected the advantages of the old core to transfer automatically.<\/p>\n

The irony became even stronger when lux explained that LG planned to return to the Monte formula by playing smaller European LANs and rebuilding their VRS position. They did not sign Monte\u2019s IGL, but after five straight match losses they were already looking back toward the methods that had made Monte successful.<\/p>\n

From Major Stage 3 to One Map Win<\/h3>\n

The results were brutal. Luminosity debuted at XSE Pro League Guangzhou and lost all three matches. The team had barely practiced together, but more than a month later they opened the Esports World Cup with a 3-13 loss to GamerLegion before falling 0-2 to Spirit. The EWC defeats extended their winless start to five consecutive series.<\/p>\n

Across the first eight maps of the project, Luminosity won only one. A core coming directly from Stage 3 of a Major opened its new chapter with five consecutive match losses, two last-place finishes and a 1-7 map record. The problems were not isolated to one player.<\/p>\n

And that is important. When one player underperforms, replacing him is an obvious solution. When almost an entire core suddenly looks worse after the system around it changes, the question should probably be bigger than one name.<\/p>\n

So Luminosity Benched\u2026 Bymas<\/h3>\n

On August 24, Luminosity benched Bymas after just two tournaments. His performances were poor, so moving him was not completely irrational. But if several players from the same previously functional core simultaneously look worse after a leadership change, removing one rifler feels more like treating a symptom than identifying the illness.<\/p>\n

Luminosity replaced Bymas with yxngstxr. One day later, they officially brought kakafu back as head coach. The organization now has three old Monte players, Monte\u2019s former coach and a plan to recover ranking points through similar European events. The one piece it still does not have is the captain who ran that system.<\/p>\n

There is a certain irony in the sequence. Luminosity signed Monte\u2019s core because it was successful, replaced Monte\u2019s IGL, stopped winning, benched another Monte player, signed another rifler and then brought back Monte\u2019s coach. At some point, the missing piece becomes difficult to ignore.<\/p>\n

Would Gizmy Have Fixed Everything?<\/h3>\n

Probably not. Pretending otherwise would make the argument weaker. Gizmy\u2019s move to 100 Thieves has not instantly turned them into a title-winning team either. The real question is not whether Gizmy guarantees trophies wherever he goes. It is whether replacing the IGL of an already functioning system was the smartest way to preserve the advantages of that system.<\/p>\n

With Gizmy, Monte had evidence that the roster worked. With lux, Luminosity currently have evidence that this version does not. There is still time to change that. yxngstxr could improve the firepower, kakafu could help bridge the tactical gap, and lux may eventually get the players aligned with his vision. But Luminosity have already made their own job much harder than it needed to be.<\/p>\n

Luminosity returned to Counter-Strike looking for a shortcut and found one in Monte: a ready-made core, Major momentum and valuable ranking points. They got the players, inherited the points and eventually even brought back the coach.
