Steam may get an unofficial alternative for users who do not need a heavy full-featured client. An independent developer from South America is working on SteamLite \u2014 a lightweight program that is meant to preserve most of Steam\u2019s main features while significantly reducing the load on the system.<\/p>\n

SteamLite should use around 140 MB of RAM<\/strong><\/h2>\n

According to the project\u2019s author, one of SteamLite\u2019s main goals is to radically reduce RAM usage. When idle, the program will allegedly require around 40 MB of RAM, and while a game is running \u2014 about 140 MB.<\/p>\n

The developer claims a reduction in RAM usage of up to 96% compared to the regular Steam client. In addition, SteamLite should create less load on the processor, which may be especially relevant for weaker PCs or systems with limited memory.<\/p>\n

Steam\u2019s main features are planned to remain<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Despite the minimalist interface, SteamLite is not intended to be a simple launcher for starting games. The author wants to keep the library, downloads, store, community, friends list, account, and other basic elements of the platform.<\/p>\n

Support for chat, invites, collections, server switching, and Steam license management has also been announced. In the published screenshot, it is already possible to see a game library with options to launch, verify files, open the folder, and uninstall installed projects.<\/p>\n

The project is still at an early stage<\/strong><\/h2>\n

At the moment, SteamLite is not yet available as a full public program. Initially, the developer plans to provide it only to a limited number of users of his optimized Windows 11 KernelOS11 build.<\/p>\n

Therefore, the stated memory usage figures should still be treated specifically as data from the project\u2019s author. Large-scale testing has not yet taken place, and stability, compatibility with different games, and the functionality of all announced features remain the main questions before a wider release.<\/p>\n\n

The author<\/a> plans to fully open SteamLite to all users in December. Before that, the program should go through limited testing and become part of the upcoming KernelOS11 25H2 v1.7.0 update.<\/p>\n

If the claimed reduction in resource usage is confirmed in practice, SteamLite could become an interesting option for users who need Steam\u2019s core features without significant background load.
