Chickens did not save the player count in Counter-Strike 2. Big heads did not help either. In October 2026, the average online of CS2 dropped again, and the slide has now lasted eight months.

This matters because the trend is a record in a bad sense. According to the source, no other period in the history of CS:GO and CS2 has shown such a long decline in average online. Therefore, the numbers deserve a closer look.

How the Decline Started

The average online of CS2 grew in February 2026. In that month, the game reached an average of 1,084,094.6 players, which was 13,650.8 more than in January. This was also the last month with positive growth.

However, the trend changed in March. Since then, the average number of players has gone down every month without a single pause.

Month-by-Month Numbers From Steam Charts

In March 2026, the average online fell by 14,921.5 players, or 1.38%, to 1,069,173.1. In April, the drop was much bigger. The game lost 94,387.4 players, or 8.83%, and finished with an average of 974,785.7.

Meanwhile, May brought another fall of 42,064.7 players, which took the average to 932,721.0. June was calmer, with a loss of 16,066.5 players and an average of 916,654.5. In July, however, CS2 lost 63,422.1 players, or 6.92%, and dropped to 853,232.4.

After that, the declines became smaller. In August, the average online fell by 27,974.7 players to 825,257.8. In September, it decreased by 19,620.0 to 805,637.8. Finally, in October, the game lost 8,313.7 players, or 1.03%, and ended the month at 797,324.2.

The monthly peaks also changed during this period. For example, the October peak was 1,402,441 players, while the peak in September reached 1,450,705. The highest monthly peak in the table belongs to March, with 1,717,624 players.

What the Latest Data Shows

The average for the last 30 days is 798,018.6 players. This is 694.4 players, or 0.09%, more than in the previous period, and the peak for this window matches October at 1,402,441 players.

As a result, the October drop is the smallest of the whole eight-month streak. In addition, the monthly declines have been getting smaller since July. The last-30-days figure even shows a tiny rise, although it does not change the monthly record.

Why This Trend Matters

According to Steam Charts, the average online of CS2 has fallen for eight months in a row. Since February, the game has lost about 287,000 players on average, which is roughly 26%. The source describes this as an anti-record in the history of CS:GO and CS2.

On the other hand, the pace of the decline has slowed down. The drop of 1.03% in October is far smaller than the 8.83% fall in April. Therefore, the next months will show whether CS2 can stop the slide or whether the player count will keep going down. Until then, the audience of the game remains large, but the long streak of declines is hard to ignore.
