Valve released a new Counter-Strike 2 update on November 5, introducing changes to Retakes mode, pet chickens and map scripting. The main gameplay improvement allows bomb defusal to finish instantly under certain conditions, while shorter freeze times and round restart delays are intended to reduce downtime between rounds.
The patch also introduces new interactions with pet chickens and expands scripting tools for map creators. No weapon balance changes or adjustments to competitive maps were listed in the update.
Retakes now feature faster bomb defusal
The biggest gameplay change affects how rounds end in Retakes mode. Bomb defusal will now finish instantly when enough time remains in the round and no active utility can prevent the Counter-Terrorists from completing it.
This means players no longer need to wait through the full defuse process in situations where the outcome is already determined. However, the change does not apply when active utility could still interrupt the defuse.
Valve also reduced two other timers in Retakes:
- Freeze time between rounds
- Round restart delay
The developers did not specify the exact new durations.
These adjustments address some of the pacing issues previously criticized by the CS2 community, particularly unnecessary waiting between rounds and after successful retakes.
Pet chickens receive new interactions
The update also introduces a small feature for players who own pet chickens. Pinging a pet chicken during freeze time will now request a trick from it.
Valve additionally changed how customized chicken names are displayed. When the game option for customized item text is set to hidden, pet chicken names will no longer appear.
These changes are limited to pet interactions and do not affect weapon mechanics or competitive gameplay.
Valve expands map scripting tools
A significant portion of the update focuses on scripting functionality for custom maps and game modes.
Valve introduced the new top-level Entities export alongside Entities.Spawn, allowing map creators to spawn entities through the updated scripting API.
Other additions include:
- Instance.Precache now supports entities.
- Instance.OnBotControl provides a new bot-control callback.
- CSPlayerController.IsControllingBot checks whether a player controls a bot.
- CSPlayerController.GetControlledBotPawn retrieves the controlled bot pawn.
- CSPlayerPawn.Reset introduces a reset method for player pawns.
Several existing functions have also been moved or renamed. For example, Instance.FindEntitiesByName is now Entities.FindByName, while Instance.EntFireAtName has become Entities.FireInput.
The previous methods remain available but are now deprecated. Valve also improved error reporting for invalid entities and added warnings when ConnectOutput targets an entity without the specified output.
Overall, the November 5 update focuses on improving the pace of Retakes and expanding technical tools for custom content rather than introducing major competitive gameplay changes.
