Knife contracts in CS2 seem to have had a much bigger impact on the market than many previously imagined. A new calculation by user VirtualTrust2048 showed that because of this mechanic, millions of “Covert” skins may have disappeared from circulation, while some cases lost a critically large share of their red items.
Almost half of all “Coverts” have already gone into contracts
The essence of the study is that redditor VirtualTrust2048 took all craftable knives with Pattern ID 1000 and, based on this data, estimated how many skins were spent on contracts. According to his conclusion, over 8 million “Covert” skins may have gone into creating knives out of roughly 22 million total.
If this estimate is close to reality, then we are talking about almost 40% of all red skins being literally destroyed for the sake of knife crafting. This is a very large share for a market where item scarcity directly affects both supply and the future price of specific positions.
Several popular cases suffered the most
According to these calculations, red skins from the Dreams & Nightmares and Riptide cases suffered the most. There, the drop is estimated at 80%, or approximately 1.641 million items, which looks like a truly colossal reduction in supply.
The Fever Case also suffered serious losses — minus 73%, or around 680 thousand skins, as well as Clutch and Revolution — minus 61%, which equals approximately 1.626 million. In other words, this is not a localized effect in one segment, but a trend that affected several important sources of “Covert” items at once.
Why this matters for the skin market
When such a large number of expensive skins goes into contracts, it automatically reduces the available supply on the market. Even if the process itself happens gradually, the cumulative effect becomes very noticeable over time, especially for cases where red skins were not mass-produced in the first place.
That is why the topic is important not only for collectors or traders, but also for ordinary players who follow prices. If the market loses a significant share of high-rarity items, it creates a foundation for further price growth both for the red skins themselves and for the knives derived from them.
Traders already see prerequisites for new growth
Trader TDM_Heyzeus also drew attention to this trend. In his opinion, the combination of mass destruction of “Covert” skins in contracts and Valve’s gradual move away from cases may push knife prices upward again in the future.
The logic here is quite simple: when the resource base for crafting shrinks and the inflow of new items does not accelerate, scarcity begins to work in favor of already existing expensive positions. In other words, the current dynamic may become not a short-term spike, but a longer story for the entire knife segment.
A trend that is already hard to ignore
The main conclusion from this calculation is that knife crafting no longer looks like a niche activity that barely affects the CS2 economy. If VirtualTrust2048’s estimate is at least approximately correct, the market has already lost almost half of all “Covert” skins, and this is too large a scale to ignore.
As a result, we are seeing not just interesting statistics from Reddit, but a signal of a structural change inside the skin market. And if the current trend continues, the scarcity of red items and the rise in knife prices may become an even more noticeable part of the CS2 economy in the near future.
