Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois has become an investor in Astralis through NXTPLAY, the investment company he operates alongside Gonzalo Vila. The pair are joining Fusion Esports Group, the ownership group that acquired Astralis in 2025.
Astralis announced the move on X, saying the organization is now part of the NXTPLAY portfolio alongside football clubs Le Mans FC, CD Extremadura and KRC Genk.

Courtois has followed Astralis for years
Courtois explained in a LinkedIn post that gaming has been part of his life for years and described the Astralis investment as a combination of business and personal interest.
The goalkeeper said he had followed Astralis not only because of the trophies won by the organization, but also because of the culture and community built around the team.
“I’ve followed Astralis for years. Not just the trophies, but the culture around it, the community they built and what it represents to an entire generation.”
The financial terms of the investment were not disclosed.
This is not Courtois’ first esports investment
Courtois already has experience investing in competitive gaming.
He became a shareholder in Spanish esports organization DUX Gaming in 2020 alongside footballer Borja Iglesias and content creator DjMaRiiO. He later participated in a €3 million funding round for DUX in 2022.
In 2024, Courtois also launched his own sim-racing organization, TC Esports. The Real Madrid player has previously competed in virtual racing events himself and has spoken publicly about his interest in gaming and motorsport.
The Astralis deal therefore expands an esports portfolio Courtois has already been building for several years.
Fusion acquired Astralis in 2025
Fusion Esports Group acquired Astralis in 2025. The investment group is led by Astralis and BLAST co-founder Jakob Lund Kristensen and former Ninjas in Pyjamas COO Jonas Gundersen. Astralis was described as the first acquisition in Fusion’s wider esports investment strategy.
The acquisition followed a difficult financial period for Astralis. Esports Insider reported that the organization posted a DKK 31.3 million loss in its 2024 financial results before the change of ownership.
Since the takeover, Astralis have also changed direction competitively. The organization moved toward an international Counter-Strike roster in 2026 and later appointed Filip “NEO” Kubski as head coach as part of what management described as a long-term rebuild.
Courtois joins one of Counter-Strike’s most successful organizations
Astralis remain one of the most successful organizations in Counter-Strike history, having won four Majors and built one of the most dominant eras the game has seen.
Courtois now joins the ownership structure during a very different period for the organization, with Fusion rebuilding both the business and competitive side of Astralis.
The move also adds another high-profile sports figure to esports investment, while giving NXTPLAY its first major holding directly connected to professional Counter-Strike.
