XSE Pro League Could Completely Reshape the VRS System — Analysts Warn of Tier-1 Chaos

XSE Pro League is rapidly becoming one of the most discussed tournaments in the Counter-Strike scene, not because of its prize pool or format, but because of its enormous impact on the Valve Regional Standings. Analyst and VRS model creator Jesper “udknud” Larsen believes the event could completely reshape the Tier-1 landscape ahead of the next Major qualification cycle, forcing teams to choose between protecting player health and securing crucial VRS points.

XSE Pro League could reshape the entire VRS race

According to udknud, XSE Pro League may become the biggest “curveball” of the season for Tier-1 Counter-Strike. The analyst explained that the tournament is expected to have massive value for the August VRS update, which will determine important invites for upcoming LAN events and heavily influence the road to the next Major.

He compared the current situation to FISSURE Playground 1, where TYLOO and Astralis managed to break into the top 10 largely thanks to one successful tournament run. In his view, XSE Pro League could create a similar scenario for teams willing to attend the event during the player break.

This event will have the same VRS impact on August ranking as Major Stage 3, udknud wrote.

The analyst also highlighted the scheduling problem surrounding the event. Many top organizations are expected to prioritize rest after the Major, but under the current VRS system, skipping XSE Pro League could seriously damage a team’s ranking position and potentially cost them direct invites to future Tier-1 tournaments later in the season.

Tier-1 teams may decline the event en masse

udknud believes that many current top-12 teams could refuse to attend XSE Pro League because of the overloaded calendar. However, that would simultaneously open a huge opportunity for Tier-2 and borderline Tier-1 rosters.

The analyst specifically highlighted teams like FaZe and Liquid as organizations that could massively benefit from the tournament:

This is the dream event for teams like FaZe and Liquid.

In his opinion, a single deep run at XSE could push some teams back into the top 10 of the August VRS rankings and dramatically improve their path toward the next Major cycle.

Alliance invite may already hint at major Tier-1 declines

Additional discussion started after Alliance, ranked only 25th in the May VRS update, reportedly received an invite to the event. udknud suggested that this may already indicate immediate declines from top-ranked teams.

Alliance announcing invite already tells us that all top teams have declined instantly I reckon.

At the same time, he pointed out that even Major Stage 1 only carries around 60% of the VRS value of XSE Pro League. Because of that, the event becomes critically important for teams fighting to secure or maintain top-12 status.

Which teams are under the biggest pressure

During the discussion on X, the analyst also named several organizations that could seriously suffer from poor performances or from skipping XSE Pro League entirely. Among the teams he identified as most vulnerable were:

  • FaZe
  • G2
  • Astralis
  • FURIA
  • FUT

Meanwhile, NAVI and Vitality were described as relatively safe thanks to their large number of Tier-1 LAN victories and consistent deep runs. He was especially critical when talking about FURIA:

They are at full decay now.

According to udknud, any team that fails to secure enough Tier-1 LAN wins over the next few months could quickly lose its “safe” position in the August rankings.

The conflict between player breaks and VRS keeps growing

Another major talking point was the growing tension between player health and the VRS system. Part of the community believes that the current ranking structure effectively forces teams to sacrifice rest periods in order to protect their ranking positions.

One community member wrote:

Player breaks are dying with this VRS forcing teams to play tournaments without rest.

Others pointed out that XSE Pro League is effectively “destroying” the possibility for some teams to attend DraculaN Season 7, despite the combination of both events potentially providing an enormous VRS boost.

udknud himself admitted that organizations are now facing an extremely difficult choice:

Protect the players health… but also risk your invites for the next major.

August VRS update could become one of the most chaotic yet

With the possibility of mass Tier-1 declines and the enormous VRS value attached to XSE Pro League, the August VRS update is already shaping up to become one of the most important and unpredictable ranking updates under Valve’s new system.

If the top teams truly decide to skip the tournament, the scene could suddenly see several new organizations break into the top 12, while the race for direct invites to the biggest LAN events of the second half of the season may become far more chaotic than expected.
