PGL returns to Romania to host its first tournament of the 2025 season, the PGL Cluj-Napoca, which boasts a massive $1.25 million prize pool. 16 top teams from around the globe will battle it out in a high-stakes competition that begins with an all best-of-three Swiss stage, followed by a single-elimination playoff bracket in front of a live audience at the legendary BTarena in Cluj-Napoca.
Tournament Format
- Swiss Stage (February 14–18)
- Single-Elimination Playoffs (February 21–23)
The event commences with a five-round Swiss group stage, held at PGL’s studios in Bucharest. All matches in this phase will be best-of-three (BO3), making it a bold choice reminiscent of 2019’s StarSeries S7—one of the last top LANs to use a BO3 Swiss format. Each day will feature up to eight BO3 series, requiring an early start of 11:00 (10:00 local time).
The top eight teams from the Swiss stage will travel to Cluj-Napoca for the playoffs. The playoffs will take place at BTarena, a 10,000-seat venue formerly known as the Polyvalent Hall—the same site that hosted the playoffs of the Romanian Major in 2015. The bracket will feature a traditional single-elimination format with all four quarterfinals played on February 21. A third-place decider will also be held, offering $63,500 in additional prize money—and the accompanying Valve Regional Standings (VRS) points—to the winner.
Sixteen teams have secured their spots through the VRS, which also determined their initial seeding and first-round matchups. Notably, some top-tier organizations such as Natus Vincere, Spirit, Vitality, and G2 have opted to skip this event, giving other contenders a chance to shine.
The entire event will be broadcast on PGL’s official Twitch and YouTube channels in multiple languages. For those looking to watch the playoffs in person, tickets are available through PGL’s official website and local ticketing partners.
The MongolZ will be looking to make a deep run at PGL Cluj-Napoca. As the highest seed in attendance, they are set to face Complexity in the opening round. If you want to support them, check out their journey and exclusive content here:
