The opening Swiss round of ESL Pro League Season 23 – Stage 1 delivered two impactful results with major VRS implications. Passion UA swept Team Liquid in convincing fashion, while paiN Gaming edged out 3DMAX in a tense three-map battle. Both matches reshaped expectations early in the Swiss bracket — and significantly shifted the Valve Regional Standings race.

Passion UA 2–0 Liquid — dominance on both maps

Passion UA entered the matchup as underdogs against Liquid, but what followed was a controlled and confident performance that left little room for debate.

Dust2 — fast start, no recovery (13–8)

Liquid began with decent structure, but Passion UA’s mid-round decisiveness quickly dismantled their setups. Senzu and try consistently found openings, while Kvem provided strong secondary support in post-plant situations. Liquid struggled to maintain economy stability, and Passion UA steadily built a lead that Liquid never meaningfully threatened.

Nuke — statement finish (19–15)

The second map proved far more dramatic. Liquid pushed the game into overtime after clawing back from a deficit, with NAF and NertZ finding impact in late regulation rounds. But in OT, Passion UA were composed. Cleaner rotations, sharper trading, and aggressive outside pressure gave them the edge. They closed the map 19–15 and completed a convincing 2–0 sweep.

The second series between paiN and 3DMAX was far tighter. Momentum shifted repeatedly, and the decider went deep into extra rounds.

Nuke — paiN strike first (13–8)

paiN opened confidently, with nqz delivering early AWP impact and strong outside control. 3DMAX found some late resistance but never truly stabilized the map.

Dust2 — 3DMAX respond (13–7)

On their own pick, 3DMAX controlled mid and long effectively. Lucky and Ex3rcice delivered key multi-frag rounds that kept paiN’s economy under constant pressure. The series was level — and heading to a tense decider.

Inferno — overtime thriller (16–14)

Inferno delivered the most dramatic map of the day. Regulation ended deadlocked, with both sides trading force-buy wins and clutches. In overtime, paiN’s experience proved decisive. Cleaner utility usage and better late-round spacing allowed them to edge ahead and close 16–14.

Swiss bracket pressure already rising

With these results, Passion UA and paiN advance to 1–0, placing themselves in favorable early Swiss positions. Liquid and 3DMAX drop to 0–1, where immediate recovery becomes critical. ESL Pro League Season 23 Stage 1 is already proving unforgiving. Underdogs are stepping up, established names are under pressure, and VRS consequences are immediate. If day one is any indication, this Swiss stage will offer no easy paths forward.
