FlyQuest officially brought Alistair “aliStair” Johnston back to the main roster. The Australian AWPer will play for the team again after being benched at the end of 2024 and later leaving in 2025, but this time his role will be much broader.
The main detail of the return is that aliStair is taking on not only the AWP, but also captaincy duties. This is an important change for FlyQuest, because the team is effectively rebuilding its internal game structure and freeing Joshua “INS” Potter from the IGL role.
aliStair is back in FlyQuest
aliStair’s return looks not just like a transfer, but like an attempt by FlyQuest to bring back a familiar figure in a new status. After his previous period with the team, the Australian managed to play for SemperFi and later for THUNDER dOWNUNDER, with whom he reached the first stage of the IEM Cologne Major.
Interestingly, at that tournament, his team was eliminated specifically by his future FlyQuest teammates. Now this story has come full circle: a player who was recently an opponent returns to a familiar tag and is expected to become one of the key elements of the new stage.
A new role for the AWPer
The biggest intrigue is not the return itself, but the fact that aliStair will become the new in-game leader. For an AWP player, this is always a difficult combination, because he has to maintain his individual level, read the game, control the tempo, and remain useful in key rounds at the same time.
aliStair himself explained it in the announcement video through the idea of team synchronization:
These players don’t need many fixes and instructions; they already know how to play. The question is only to find a stable level where we all play together and see the game in a very similar way.
What this changes for INS
aliStair’s move to the IGL role should directly relieve INS. Before he took on captaincy duties in 2025, INS was one of FlyQuest’s main statistical leaders. Therefore, the role change may be no less important than the replacement of the AWPer.

For the team, this potentially brings two positives at once: aliStair gets the opportunity to lead the game, while INS can regain part of his individual impact. If this balance works, FlyQuest can become less dependent on individual moments and look more stable over the distance of series.
Context after regali and story
After aliStair’s departure in 2025, FlyQuest tried other options on the AWP. First, the team signed Iulian “regali” Harjău, who had an average rating of 1.11 over a year with the roster. Then, for the first half of 2026, the position was taken by João “story” Vieira, who posted 1.10 before returning to SAW.
Against this background, aliStair’s return looks risky if judged only by numbers, because during his previous period with FlyQuest he had an average rating of 1.02. But here the club is clearly betting not only on pure AWP statistics, but also on leadership, regional experience, and understanding of the players.
The first match has already been played
aliStair’s return has already happened in an official match: FlyQuest defeated NEXVOID 2:0 in the IEM Beijing 2026 Asia Closed Qualifier. The team’s next opponent in the qualification bracket will be Rare Atom.
This start is important specifically psychologically. FlyQuest got a quick win with their new-old AWPer and can more calmly test the updated game model. But the real assessment will begin not with the match against NEXVOID, but with how the team looks against stronger opponents in the qualifier and over the international distance.
