Counter-Strike 2 celebrates its third anniversary on September 27, three years after Valve officially launched the game in 2023, replacing CS as the current version of Counter-Strike. The release moved the series to Source 2 and introduced dynamic smokes, subtick networking, rebuilt maps and a new Premier system.
Three years later, CS2 has changed significantly from its launch version. Some of the changes are clear improvements over CS, while several features and technical advantages of the previous game are still missing.
Three years of Counter-Strike 2
CS2 officially launched on September 27, 2023 after several months of Limited Test access.
The move to Source 2 gave Valve a new technical foundation for maps, lighting, Workshop tools and future gameplay systems. Premier also became one of the main competitive modes, introducing a visible CS Rating and regional and global leaderboards.
Valve also moved away from the traditional tick-based input model by introducing subtick technology, designed to record the exact timing of movement, shots and grenade throws between server ticks.
Since release, Arms Race has returned, community maps have regularly appeared in official matchmaking and Valve have introduced new mechanics and modes, including Rush in 2026.
What CS2 does better than CS:GO
Dynamic smokes remain one of the clearest upgrades.
CS used fixed smoke grenades, while CS2 introduced volumetric smoke that interacts with the environment. Bullets can temporarily create openings through the cloud, while HE grenades can clear sections of smoke and create short windows of visibility.
The change added tactical possibilities that simply did not exist in CS.
Map technology and graphics also took a major step forward with Source 2. CS2 supports more advanced lighting, materials and environmental detail, while Valve and community creators have access to newer tools for building and scripting maps.
Premier is another area where CS2 offers more transparency. CS matchmaking mainly relied on traditional ranks such as Master Guardian, Legendary Eagle and Global Elite. In CS2, players receive a numerical CS Rating and can compare their position through regional and global leaderboards.
Source 2 has also allowed Valve to continue adding systems that would have been harder to build on the older engine, from expanded Workshop tools to entirely new modes such as Rush.
What CS:GO still did better than CS2
Performance remains one of the biggest advantages CS had.
The older game could produce high framerates on significantly weaker hardware, while CS2 requires considerably more CPU, GPU and memory resources. That difference is especially noticeable in Counter-Strike, where competitive players often prioritize stable 240, 360 or even higher FPS over graphical quality.
Traditional 128-tick servers are another major difference. CS players could use 128-tick environments through platforms such as FACEIT and ESEA. CS2 instead uses 64-tick servers combined with subtick input registration.
Subtick is designed to record actions more precisely between server updates, but CS2 does not offer the traditional 128-tick environment that became standard for high-level third-party matchmaking during the CS era.
CS also offered more official game modes. Danger Zone, Demolition and Flying Scoutsman have still not returned three years after the release of CS2. Arms Race eventually came back and Valve have added new content, but the overall variety remains smaller.
There is also one major type of content that CS2 has still never received: a traditional Operation.
Operation Riptide ended in February 2022 and remains the last full Counter-Strike Operation with weekly missions, stars and a dedicated progression and reward system. CS2 has received new cases, collections, maps and other content, but no direct replacement for that format.
Three years later
CS2 is now far more complete than the version Valve released in September 2023. Dynamic smokes, Source 2 map technology and the Premier rating system are established parts of the game and represent clear upgrades over CS in several areas.
At the same time, CS still holds advantages in performance, traditional 128-tick third-party servers and content variety. Players are also still waiting for several old modes and the first traditional Operation of the CS2 era.
Three years after launch, CS2 has built its own identity, but the comparison with CS is far from over.
