The CS2 chicken egg story keeps growing. After data miner CSMENT first confirmed the existence of a folder called “Pet Book” inside the game’s files, we decided to look deeper. What we found was a large, mostly complete set of assets tied to the mystery pet system.
This matters because it moves the story from a single leaked folder name to real, visible content. Instead of just knowing the Pet Book exists, players can now see what it actually contains.
How We Found the Files
CSMENT was the first to spot the Pet Book folder and share it on X, alongside hatching and movement animations for chickens. However, the post only confirmed that the folder existed. It did not show everything inside it.
From there, we went through the game’s files ourselves. Inside, we found dozens of individual images, ranging from page titles and decorative graphics to darker, unexplained assets.
What the Files Contain
The Pet Book appears to work like a scrapbook-style diary. Several page titles use a handwritten font, including “Just Hatched,” “Early Days,” and “A Little Older.” These labels suggest the book tracks a pet chicken’s growth over time, stage by stage.
The design also includes classic scrapbook elements. A gold oval photo frame, a textured book cover, watercolor leaf borders, and small footprint graphics all appear throughout the files. Together, they give the Pet Book a personal, keepsake-style feel rather than a simple in-game menu.
Two more pages stand out for a different reason. One is titled “Park Life,” while the other is titled “Road Trip.” The Road Trip page uses a worn map background covered in travel-style patches. Each patch names a real CS2 map, including Inferno, Overpass, Nuke (labeled “Cedar Creek”), Mirage, and Ancient. This links the Pet Book directly to maps players already recognize.
Not everything fits a lighthearted pet theme, though. One image reads “WANTED — For Accessory To Tactical Chaos,” styled like an old wanted poster, next to a repeating pattern of a pistol, knife, grenade, and rifle. Another file is labeled “The Way of the Spur,” pointing to a further section that remains unexplained.
The files also include two unsettling images. One shows a roasted chicken lying in flames, paired with a form labeled “FIELD INCEDENT REPORT” from a fictional “VCS – Operation Center.” The other shows scattered feathers and a lightning-like burst rising from a cracked patch of ground, tagged as a “FIELD PHOTO.” Neither has been explained so far, but both share the same in-universe photo-report style used elsewhere in the leak.
Chicken Animations Also Surfaced on Twitter
In addition to the Pet Book files, chicken hatching and movement animations have now been shared on Twitter as well. This gives more players a chance to see the animations in action.
Three Chicken Breeds Found in the Files
Beyond the growth stages, the game’s files also reveal three distinct chicken breeds: Chicken, Chicken Polish, and Chicken Silkie. Each breed comes with its own set of color variations.
The standard Chicken breed has 13 different colorways. Chicken Polish follows with 12 colorways, while Chicken Silkie includes 9. In total, this adds up to 34 possible chicken variants across the three breeds.
This level of variety suggests the pets system may work similarly to CS2’s existing skin system, where players could end up with different breeds and colorways at different rates.
Why This Matters
Together, these files paint a much clearer picture of what Valve may be building. Rather than a single hidden item, the Pet Book points to a full pets system with its own visual identity, growth stages, and even a darker, tactical undertone fitting CS2’s style. Valve has not confirmed any of this officially. However, with this much material already uncovered, more details are likely to surface soon.
