CS2 Pets System Explained – Eggs, Growth and Achievements

A new feature is coming to Counter-Strike 2, and it centers on something unexpected: pets. According to details shared by data miner ThourCS2, players will soon be able to hatch, raise and even name a virtual companion inside the game.

This is interesting because the system goes far beyond a simple cosmetic add-on. It includes feeding mechanics, a growth cycle, achievements tied to specific maps, and a built-in history log for pets that are no longer around. In short, CS2 is adding a layer of ongoing care and progression that players will need to actively maintain.

How Pets Are Obtained and Raised

Players receive an Egg as a weekly drop from the Weekly Care Package. However, the egg does not hatch immediately. It takes around seven days or more for the Egg to become a Chick.

From there, the pet follows a clear lifecycle. It progresses from Egg to Chick, then to Pullet, and finally to Hen. As the pet grows older, it becomes more integrated into the game. Younger pets, such as Chicks, remain restricted, while older pets, like Pullets, can accompany players into their matches.

Feeding is essential throughout this process. Pets require Chicken Feed to stay with the player, and this feed is also obtained through Weekly Care Packages. If a pet is not fed, it will leave. As a result, players need to stay consistent with their weekly activity to keep their companion around.

Naming, Photos and the HatchBook

Once hatched, a pet can be named or renamed by the player. Its full history is preserved in a feature called the HatchBook, which automatically records every pet the player has raised, including ones that are no longer with them.

In addition to tracking history, CS2 will include a Photo Booth feature. Here, players can pose their pet, apply filters, add hats, and trigger effects such as fire, lightning or confetti. Some map-based stages will also be unlockable through this feature.

Not everything is available right away, though. Certain poses, locations and activities inside the Photo Booth are restricted until the pet reaches a required age or maturity level. Meanwhile, the game will also mark milestones, birthdays and other special interactions that players can celebrate with their pet.

Achievements Tied to Maps and Playstyle

The Pet system also introduces its own progression flags. For example, a Warehouse-related unlock becomes available simply by reaching the Pullet stage, which is level two in the pet’s growth cycle.

Beyond that, each competitive map has its own dedicated achievement. Dust II, Baggage, Mirage, Inferno, Nuke, Cache, Train and Ancient all include a “visited” achievement tied to that specific map. To unlock it, players must finish a match on that map using official servers.

There are also achievements built around survival and risk-taking. These include being killed by burn damage, being killed by a Taser, and being killed by a planted C4. Therefore, the system rewards not just consistency, but also specific in-match moments.

Eventually, every pet reaches the end of its lifecycle. A pet can retire due to age, even if it has been properly fed and cared for every week through consistent play.

What Remains Unknown

Some details are still missing. Specifically, the exact growth times between the Chick, Pullet and Hen stages have not been confirmed. The exact adult lifespan of a pet is also unknown at this stage.

Conclusion

According to ThourCS2, all of this information is based on strings and code currently found within the game files, which means details could still change before an official release. Even so, the scope of the system already points to a feature built for long-term engagement rather than a one-time cosmetic. Between weekly feeding requirements, map-specific achievements and a permanent HatchBook history, CS2’s Pet system asks players to treat their companion as an ongoing part of their in-game routine. For players who enjoy long-term progression systems, this addition could become a meaningful reason to log in consistently, separate from competitive play itself.
