It does not take an expert to point out the best handful of players in Counter-Strike. Whether that is donk with his transcendent ability or his exceptional HLTV Rating, ZywOo with his prescience or his exceptional HLTV Rating, or m0NESY with his split-second flicks…or his exceptional HLTV Rating. All of the great players in modern CS are visually impressive, but they also output on the statistical level too. This is usually rewarded due to a high kill count per game, high damage dealt per game, or by dying very infrequently while still finding regular impact (looking at you, sh1ro). Looking at the middle of the pack is where things get much murkier. The gray ratings (according to HLTV: 0.96-1.04) will never jump off the page, but some of these players are satisfying very particular duties and doing so at a level that more than satisfies the eye test.
Each player is in the gray Rating for 2026 thus far (0.96-1.04), but I will keep my eyes peeled for their individual moments of brilliance and how they manage to keep the less glamorous aspects of their Counter-Strike teams in order.
Presented in order of who I imagine most fans will have less of an opinion on to the more established names (stats are recorded on August 11 via HLTV with filters of 2026 and Top 20):
piriajr – paiN Gaming (1.02 – 64 maps): piriajr joined paiN in January of 2026 to little fanfare. The 23 year old rifler for paiN has been their sleeper best player despite the fact that he has been dealt a very poor hand on this team. With an AWPer situation that is only now being sorted and a ‘star player’ beside him in snow, there’s not much to depend on other than himself. He’s putting up an exceptional 1.07 Rating on CT side Mirage where he is the B anchor. The only way to consistently find impact as a B Anchor on Mirage is to impose yourself and piriajr does just that. He frequently looks for fights into apartments, jumping up and dueling into the kitchen around his own utility. He also is reliable when equipping the secondary AWP. On top of that, I would say he is the most mechanically explosive player on the team. For all of the talk we’ve heard over the years regarding snow taking over as Brazil’s best player (still waiting, of course), I’ve heard nothing regarding piriajr and he consistently impresses.

xiELO – PARIVISION (0.98 – 99 maps): xiELO was the boy who lived. After dastan’s restructuring of the PARIVISION roster, I was glad to see xiELO survived the wave of cuts. Victims of their own success, BELCHONOKK and nota were both deemed unfit for the new PARIVISION who leapfrogged their other tier 2 adversaries and found themselves in the midst of elite competition on an all too regular basis. xiELO regularly stood out despite the fact that the trio were taking turns bottom-fragging or pulling through with statistical output. I always likened xiELO’s movement to be the most like donk. He frequently makes fights messy with various crouch-substitutions for counter-strafing and throws in donk slides on a regular basis. From watching a huge portion of the PARIVISION matches in 2026 so far, I would also say that xiELO simply makes few mistakes as well. nota would frequently die for seemingly no reason with an inexplicable push. BELCHONOKK would at times not understand what losing conditions are created when he positions in certain ways. xiELO may not always go toe to toe with the strongest mechanical players in the world, but he at least gives himself fair fights and rarely ever caused catastrophic errors.

dem0n – FUT (1.03 – 97 maps): This was the most hyped player from FUT coming into 2026. From my perspective, dziuggs looked the better prospect in their first few events and has now passed dem0n on a statistical level as well, but dem0n still does more than just past the nameplate test (dem0n is a very cool username). The 18 year old may have one of the fastest first bullets coming out of a rifle for a player that is relegated to extremity positions. I know those eyes can get heavy when staring at the drab green that paints the back walls of Ancient’s A bombsite which he anchors. Regardless, dem0n is lightning quick. He’s grown on me a lot as a player and that might be even furthered this season as his weakest regularly played map, Overpass is now out of the pool. I feel like Cache should be a playground for a headshot machine (65.4%).

PR – Mouz (1.02 – 60 maps): Despite the fact that PR had an awfully shaky start to 2026, I have faith in his ability to course correct under the guidance of my 2025 COTY, sycrone and the hardest fragging IGL, xertioN. I chalk it all up to mentality for the Czech 18 year old. Learning that you’re losing ash and getting Snax just sucks. I don’t really care what amount of testimony from Snax’s ex-teammates we hear in the media, there is a reason none of those ex-teammates have even floated his name in conversation to join them on their higher profile teams. Not a single Falcons or Liquid-related Snax rumor, was there? PR is shooting laser beams. His low sensitivity on rifles is a joy to watch when he’s locked in. Multifrags look so effortless when presented with sequential targets. His anchoring alongside Spinx can look rough, but I just need Spinx to stick a little closer to the rookie.

TeSeS – Falcons (1.02 – 100 maps): Pookie. That’s what I call TeSeS. It will never cease to impress me when TeSeS remains that good when asked to do play some awful roles and while under the external organization pressures. I think the best thing zonic has ever done in his tenure with Falcons was, when at the crossroads of cutting Magisk or TeSeS he put his past with Magisk aside and made the right call. TeSeS should be in conversations of the best anchors in the world more frequently with how his output against elite opposition has remained a constant despite Falcons finding themselves crumbling when faced against the final hurdle. I can only be pleased with how TeSeS finally received the ultimate teamplay achievement in capturing a Major trophy.
