PGL reveal invited teams for Astana 2026 as several top squads decline

PGL have officially announced the invited teams for PGL Astana 2026, which will take place from May 9–17 in Kazakhstan. The $1.6 million tournament will feature 16 teams, with 12 direct invites and the remaining four spots decided through regional qualifiers. The announcement quickly sparked discussion after several notable teams — including Vitality and Natus Vincere — declined their invitations.

Several top teams skip Astana

Although the majority of top teams accepted the invitation, a number of prominent organizations chose not to attend the event. According to available information, Vitality, NAVI, Astralis, FaZe, GamerLegion, and NRG all declined their invitations. One key reason appears to be the scheduling conflict with IEM Atlanta, which takes place during the same period.

This creates a situation where many teams prioritized the ESL event instead of the PGL tournament in Kazakhstan. Despite the absences, Astana will still feature several high-profile teams from the current world ranking.

Confirmed invited teams

At the moment, the following teams are confirmed for the tournament:

  • PARIVISION
  • Falcons
  • Team Spirit
  • G2 Esports
  • The MongolZ
  • MOUZ
  • FURIA
  • Aurora
  • HEROIC
  • Gentle Mates
  • Monte
  • FUT Esports

Four additional teams will qualify through regional tournaments.

FUT invitation sparks confusion

One of the most discussed aspects of the announcement involved FUT Esports. The team accepted an invitation to PGL Astana, despite also being confirmed to participate in IEM Atlanta, which takes place at the same time. This raised immediate questions across social media about how the team could attend both events simultaneously. Community members quickly pointed out the logistical conflict, with many asking whether FUT would eventually withdraw from one of the tournaments.

FUT explain the decision

Shortly after the announcement, HLTV reached out to FUT for clarification. A representative from the organization explained that accepting both invitations was intentional and related to potential visa issues.

It was on purpose to cover the possibility that the team wouldn’t be able to get visas. PGL allowed every team to withdraw from the event until a certain date, which is after the deadline visa grant for IEM Atlanta.

In other words, the organization secured both slots as a contingency plan in case travel complications prevent them from attending one of the events.

Community reaction

The announcement triggered a wave of reactions across X and Reddit. Many fans immediately noticed the scheduling conflict and questioned FUT’s participation.

Some of the most common reactions included:

  • “Explain yourself — how do you play two tournaments at the same time?”
  • “So FUT is going to drop Atlanta or Astana?”
  • “Unless they invented teleportation, something doesn’t add up.”

Others also highlighted a possible visa complication involving Kazakh entry rules, suggesting that certain players could face difficulties entering the country.

Meanwhile, Monte responded to the invite announcement with a confident emoji post, while some fans expressed excitement about the possibility of local star molodoy lifting the trophy in his home country.

Regional qualifiers still to come

The final four teams will be determined through regional qualifiers scheduled to begin at the end of March. Each region — Europe, North America, South America, and Asia — will send one team to complete the lineup for the Astana event. With several elite teams skipping the tournament, the qualifiers could offer a rare opportunity for rising squads to secure a place at a major international LAN.
