Spirit kept their Esports World Cup 2026 campaign alive after defeating Luminosity 2-0 in the first round of Group A’s lower bracket. After suffering a surprise opening loss to JiJieHao, the tournament favorites responded with a much more convincing performance, taking Ancient 13-3 before surviving a lengthy battle on Dust2, 19-15. The victory means Spirit remain in contention for a playoff spot, while Luminosity are eliminated from the tournament after back-to-back defeats.
Spirit dominate Luminosity’s Ancient pick
Luminosity chose Ancient to start the best-of-three series, but their map pick quickly turned into a one-sided affair. Spirit controlled the game from the opening rounds and gave their opponents almost no opportunity to establish momentum.
Spirit closed the first half with a commanding 9-3 advantage before winning all four rounds after the break to complete a 13-3 victory. Danil “donk” Kryshkovets was at the center of the dominant performance, while Spirit as a whole looked significantly more comfortable than in their 10-13 loss to JiJieHao in the opening round.
Luminosity push Spirit to the limit on Dust2
Dust2 proved much more competitive. Spirit’s own map pick developed into a back-and-forth contest, with neither side able to create a decisive advantage in regulation.
The teams finished the first half tied 6-6 and remained level after 24 rounds, sending the map into overtime. Luminosity continued to fight for their tournament lives, but Spirit eventually took control in the additional rounds and secured a 19-15 victory to close the series 2-0.
The result ended Luminosity’s EWC campaign after two consecutive defeats. They had previously suffered a 3-13 loss to GamerLegion in their opening match.
Spirit continue their lower-bracket run
Spirit entered the tournament as one of the leading contenders but were immediately put under pressure after losing 10-13 to JiJieHao on Mirage in their opening match. The win over Luminosity gives them another chance to recover and fight their way through the Group A lower bracket.
donk leads Spirit with a 1.60 rating
donk was comfortably the standout player of the series. The Spirit star finished the two maps with a 47-29 K-D record, 92.8 ADR, 84.0% KAST and a 1.60 rating. Dmitry “sh1ro” Sokolov also produced a strong performance with a 1.31 rating and 37-23 K-D, while Boris “magixx” Vorobiev finished on 1.18.
For Luminosity, Oscar “AZUWU” Bell was the only player to finish close to a positive individual performance, recording a 0.99 rating.
Spirit gain VRS points after avoiding elimination
The victory also gave Spirit a positive boost in the Valve Regional Standings. According to the post-match projection, the Russian squad gained 14 VRS points, strengthening their position at the top of the ranking.
Luminosity, meanwhile, lost two points and dropped from No. 33 to No. 35 in the projected standings. While the change is relatively small, their early elimination means they will leave Paris without another opportunity to improve their position at the event.

Spirit kept their reaction brief after securing the 2-0 victory and extending their stay at the Esports World Cup.

Luminosity, meanwhile, leave the tournament after two consecutive defeats, having managed to push Spirit deep on Dust2 but ultimately falling short of forcing a deciding map.
