Caster and analyst Thorin has delivered a blunt verdict on Mykyta “cmtry” Samolotov’s place at FUT Esports. He suggested that the young AWPer may not be the right fit for the roster. However, his full comments show that the situation is more complex than a simple rejection.
The debate matters because cmtry has already survived one round of transfer rumors this summer. His coach also publicly denied that a change was planned. Thorin’s remarks have now brought the discussion back into focus, although he did not fully support the proposed move.
A Rumor That Wouldn’t Go Away
FUT Esports built its current roster around the former Natus Vincere Junior core. The organization signed dem0n, Krabeni, cmtry, dziugss and coach coolio in August 2025. Later, FUT added launX, but after some time replace him with xfl0ud.
Cmtry is an 18-year-old Ukrainian player. He has served as FUT’s primary AWPer since the roster switch.
In late June 2026, French insider Sébastien “krL” Perez reported that FUT was exploring a swap. Spanish rifler-turned-AWPer Álvaro “SunPayus” García was named as the priority target.
The timing matched G2 Esports benching SunPayus on June 25, 2026. G2 then signed Artem “r1nkle” Moroz in his place. Meanwhile, Team Liquid was also reportedly considering cmtry as a replacement for its AWPer, ultimate.
The rumor remained active through the summer. On August 22, 2026, cmtry addressed it directly. He said that he had read the reports but did not allow them to affect him.
Thorin Explains the SunPayus Link
Thorin explained why a cmtry-for-SunPayus swap could have made sense on paper. He criticised cmtry’s AWP impact and raised a possible leadership benefit from signing SunPayus.
I can totally see why FUT were considering replacing cmtry with SunPayus. cmtry isn’t good enough with the AWP. He fires like he’s prime s1mple but without anywhere close to a good enough hit-rate. Plus SunPayus could have helped with the mid-rounding and late round calls presumably.
The point about consistency also matches FUT’s 2026 match data. Cmtry recorded a 1.31 rating on one map against G2 at IEM Kraków. However, he posted a 0.56 rating on another map in the same matchup.
A Problem With the Plan
Thorin also identified a clear weakness in the possible transfer. In his view, SunPayus does not fit the rifle-heavy style that defines FUT’s game.
The angle that makes less sense is SunPayus isn’t a good rifler. FUT is a team that’s all about up tempo early round rifle play.
This potential style mismatch weakens the argument for the switch. SunPayus could potentially improve FUT’s mid-round and late-round decisions. However, the move could also affect the fast, rifle-driven executes that shape the team’s identity.
What It Means for FUT
Scepticism around FUT’s AWP role has not disappeared, despite coach coolio shutting down the transfer talk. However, FUT underlined its strength by reaching the Esports World Cup 2026 grand final. The team ultimately lost to Spirit in the title match.
As of August 24, FUT is ranked third in the VRS rankings following the Esports World Cup. For now, cmtry remains on the FUT roster, and no official change has been confirmed by FUT. Still, the discussion around his AWP consistency may return whenever FUT’s results fall short.
