Staehr powers Astralis past FUT in dominant EPL Stage 2 start

Astralis opened their ESL Pro League Season 23 Stage 2 campaign with a convincing 2–0 victory over FUT Esports, controlling both maps from start to finish. The Danish side secured Ancient 13–6 and Mirage 13–3, with Victor “Staehr” Staehr leading the server and earning the Player of the Match award. FUT struggled to find openings against Astralis’ disciplined defense and structured mid-round play.

Ancient — Astralis set the tone (13–6)

The opening map, Ancient, was Astralis’ pick and immediately showed why they were comfortable on the map. Astralis controlled the tempo from the very first gun rounds, applying constant pressure on FUT’s defensive positions. Strong opening duels from Staehr and phzy repeatedly gave Astralis early advantages, forcing FUT into difficult retake situations.

While FUT attempted to stabilize through slower defaults and utility-heavy executes, Astralis consistently denied map control and punished every mistake. Their coordination around mid and A site proved especially effective, preventing FUT from building any momentum. By the time the second half began, Astralis had already built a comfortable lead and closed the map 13–6 without allowing FUT to mount a comeback.

Mirage — complete domination (13–3)

If Ancient showed Astralis’ structure, Mirage highlighted their firepower. The Danish lineup completely dismantled FUT on the CT side, shutting down nearly every execute attempt. Staehr once again delivered impact rounds, while ryu and jabbi provided consistent support in defensive setups.

FUT found themselves repeatedly stuck in unfavorable late-round situations, unable to convert mid control into successful site hits. Astralis quickly ran away with the map, finishing it 13–3 and sealing the 2–0 series victory.

Match statistics

Player of the Match — Victor “Staehr” Staehr

Across two maps:

  • 35–20 K-D
  • 108.8 ADR
  • 88.6% KAST
  • 1.70 rating

Beyond the raw numbers, Staehr’s aggressive rifling consistently created openings that allowed Astralis to dictate the pace of the match.

VRS impact

The result also affects the Valve Regional Standings (VRS):

  • Astralis: +17 points (rising to around #9)
  • FUT: −13 points (dropping toward #12)

With the Major qualification race continuing throughout the season, even early Stage 2 results like this carry real importance for team rankings.

A familiar rivalry

Interestingly, the matchup continues a growing rivalry between the two teams. Despite FUT historically holding the edge in several previous meetings earlier in the year, Astralis have now managed to reverse the trend with a dominant performance when it mattered most. This victory not only gives Astralis a strong start in Stage 2 but also sends a message that the team’s form is steadily improving.

What comes next

With the win, Astralis move to 1–0 in the Stage 2 Swiss format, positioning themselves well for a potential deep run in the tournament. FUT, meanwhile, drop to 0–1, meaning the pressure immediately increases as they look to avoid falling into the elimination bracket. ESL Pro League Season 23 continues to deliver unpredictable results, but if Astralis maintain the level they showed in this series, they could quickly become one of the most dangerous teams in the stage.
