Starting March 16, players from Germany in Counter-Strike 2 will receive a new X-Ray Scanner tab in their inventory. From now on, all containers in the game will be opened through it. This effectively changes the classic case-opening mechanic for the German region: before opening a container, the player will be able to see the item inside, but it can only be obtained after purchase.
How the X-Ray Scanner Works
The new system allows players to scan a container and see the item inside before opening it. After scanning, the container is considered used and disappears from the inventory, while the item inside is immediately revealed to the player.
However, to scan the next container, the player must first purchase the item that was shown during the previous scan. In this way, Valve prevents players from simply checking cases without actually buying the items.

Exclusive Item for Launching the System
After the X-Ray Scanner appears, players will receive a special starting item — Genuine P250 | X-ray.
This skin is granted once and cannot be traded or sold. It must be claimed before players begin using the scanner for other containers.
Limitations of the New Mechanic
Valve also clarified several important rules for how the X-Ray Scanner works:
- a scanned container disappears from the inventory and cannot be sold or traded;
- the item inside becomes fixed and cannot be changed or rescanned;
- only one container can be scanned at a time, regardless of its type.
These rules also apply to Souvenir Packages, which are considered containers as well.
Why Valve Is Introducing This System
A similar mechanic has already been used in previous versions of Counter-Strike specifically for Germany. It is connected to local loot box regulations, which require greater transparency in random reward systems.
In practice, the X-Ray Scanner allows the player to see the result before purchasing, partially reducing the element of randomness that is often compared to gambling mechanics.
What This Means for the Skin Economy
For most players around the world, the case system in Counter-Strike 2 will remain unchanged — the X-Ray Scanner applies only to the German region.
However, such changes once again raise questions about loot box regulation in video games. The Counter-Strike skin economy has long become one of the largest in-game economies in gaming, so any regional restrictions can potentially influence the game’s mechanics.

X-Ray Scanner
Valve is once again adapting the container system in Counter-Strike 2 to meet German legal requirements. The X-Ray Scanner allows players to see the item inside a case before opening it but introduces strict rules for container usage.
For the global audience, nothing will change, but this step demonstrates how regional laws can influence even such fundamental mechanics as cases in CS2.
