Tournament context
IEM Cologne Major 2026 Stage 1 is played in a Swiss format: the opening matches are played as Bo1, while elimination and advancement series are Bo3. Matches between teams with a 2:0 record carry special weight, because a win immediately guarantees a place in Stage 2, while a loss does not eliminate a team from the tournament, but moves it into the 2:1 pool, where the right to make one more mistake becomes a much more limited resource.

The second map turned into a full-scale extended battle with overtimes, where M80 had their chances to drag the match to a third map. But in the longest and toughest part of the series, B8 proved more resilient. The team withstood the pressure, did not fall apart in the exchanges, and closed out their opponent exactly where every mistake had already become maximally costly.

B8 won the series 2:0, but this victory was definitely not easy. If on Ancient the team played the ending better and took the map through more composed decisions in the decisive rounds, then on Inferno they had to survive a true marathon.
The key difference was not only the individual form of certain players, but also B8’s ability to remain cohesive in a drawn-out match. The Ukrainian roster survived the toughest stretch of the series, squeezed past M80 in a doubly tense finish, and deservedly secured qualification to Stage 2, while the Americans now have to make their way there through one more match in the Swiss bracket.
