CS2 lost 287,000 players and $3.7 billion in skin market value

Two major indicators of the Counter-Strike 2 ecosystem have been declining in recent months. Average concurrent player statistics show a prolonged downturn from spring levels, while the estimated value of the in-game item market has experienced an even sharper correction over the same period.

CS2 lost around 287,000 average concurrent players

Approximately eight months ago, CS2’s average concurrent player count exceeded one million. In February, the figure stood at around 1.084 million, while in March it was 1.069 million. The average for the last 30 days has now fallen to approximately 792,000. As a result, the difference compared to spring levels amounts to around 287,000 players.

However, the decline did not happen in a single month. In April, the average concurrent player count dropped to 975,000, followed by 933,000 in May, 917,000 in June, 853,000 in July, 825,000 in August, 806,000 in September, and approximately 797,000 in October. In other words, this represents a long-term downward trend.

The biggest decline occurred during spring and summer

The most significant monthly loss was recorded in April, when the average player count decreased by approximately 94,000, or 8.83%. The second major drop occurred in July, with a loss of more than 63,000 players, or 6.92%.

By autumn, the pace of the decline had slowed considerably. In September, the average concurrent player count fell by approximately 19,600, followed by another 8,300 in October. This means the negative trend continues, but it is no longer as sharp as it was several months ago.

The skin market lost approximately $3.7 billion

The in-game item market experienced an even more significant change during this period. In mid-March, its total market capitalization was estimated at approximately $9.5 billion, after which the chart began moving almost continuously downward.

By early November, the estimated value had fallen to around $5.8 billion. As a result, over approximately eight months, the market lost around $3.7 billion in estimated capitalization — almost 40% of its March value.

The skin market and player count are different indicators

At the same time, these figures should not be directly combined into a single measure of CS2’s overall health. Average concurrent player count reflects how many people are regularly playing the game, while skin market capitalization represents the estimated value of a vast number of digital items based on their current market prices.

As a result, the item market can change much faster than the game’s actual player base. If prices for popular knives, gloves, or skins decline significantly across the board, the estimated value of the entire market can also fall sharply, even without a proportional decrease in the number of active players.

CS2 still maintains a massive player base

Despite losing part of its average concurrent player count, CS2’s absolute figures remain very high. Even after eight months of decline, the average concurrent audience remains around 800,000 players, while daily peak figures continue to exceed one million.

Therefore, the current statistics suggest a significant cooling-off period following a strong start to 2026 rather than an immediate collapse of the game. The more interesting question is whether CS2 can stop the decline during the final months of the year or whether the current stabilization will prove temporary.

The main takeaway is that two important parts of the ecosystem have been declining simultaneously. Over approximately eight months, CS2 lost around 287,000 average concurrent players, while the estimated value of the skin market decreased by approximately $3.7 billion.

However, the scale of these declines is very different: the player base has decreased gradually, while the item market has experienced a much deeper correction. That is why the coming months will reveal whether this marks the end of a major cooling-off cycle or the beginning of a more prolonged downturn surrounding CS2.
