One of the oldest esports organizations is bringing a major chapter of its history to an end. Evil Geniuses have announced that they will cease competitive and day-to-day operations starting November 2, 2026, citing the difficult economic situation in the industry.
Evil Geniuses are shutting down operations
The organization explained that over the past few years, it had attempted to restructure its operating model by stabilizing internal processes, rebuilding its reputation, increasing activity, and expanding into new esports titles and content creator partnerships.
However, these efforts proved insufficient. The club explicitly identified two major problems — limited opportunities to attract sponsors and the continuously rising costs of competing at the highest level.
The business was deemed unsustainable under current conditions
Evil Geniuses management emphasized that the organization had continued investing in the project but ultimately concluded that operating responsibly under the current economic conditions was no longer possible.
Despite continued investment and the dedication of the EG team, we have concluded that this business can no longer be operated responsibly under the current conditions.
The organization will now gradually wind down its activities and work with the players, coaches, and employees affected by the decision. This means the announcement does not represent an immediate shutdown of all operations, but rather a controlled closure.
Players have already been allowed to seek new teams
All Evil Geniuses players are now free to negotiate with other organizations. The club also specified that VALORANT players and coaches will be able to sign new contracts after the season concludes on November 2.

Management also appealed to other companies to consider hiring EG employees. CEO Chris DeAppolonio stated that he is personally willing to recommend the players, content creators, and staff members who worked for the organization.
More than 25 years of history
Evil Geniuses are leaving the competitive scene after more than 25 years of the brand’s existence. During that time, the organization competed across numerous esports titles and became one of the most recognizable clubs in North American esports.
In its final statement, management thanked all the players, employees, fans, and partners who had been part of EG throughout this period. For the organization itself, November 2 will effectively mark the end of its active competitive history.
The problem extends beyond one organization
What stands out in Evil Geniuses‘ statement is the explanation behind the decision. The club does not attribute its closure to one unsuccessful roster or a particular esports title, but instead directly points to systemic problems — a shortage of sponsorship revenue and the rising costs of competing at the top level.
That is why this story extends far beyond a single brand. The closure of such a well-known organization after decades of operation once again demonstrates how challenging the economics of modern esports remain, even for clubs with a long history and a recognizable name.
