IEM Cologne 2026 – All the Debutant Teams & Players

IEM Cologne 2026 will feature 31 first-time Major players — a significant wave of new names entering the biggest stage in Counter-Strike. In contrast, StarLadder Budapest Major 2025 will feature just 19 debutants, making it one of the lowest debut counts in modern CS. Cologne still represents one of the largest injections of fresh talent in CS2 — and that’s exactly what makes this Major feel different.

A Major Between Two Eras

The tournament will run from June 2 to June 21, featuring the standard Major format:

  • three 16-team Swiss stages
  • eight teams eliminated per stage
  • elimination and advancement matches in Bo3
  • all other matches in Bo1

The top eight teams advance to the playoffs, where a single-elimination bracket decides the champion, with the Grand Final played as a Best-of-5.

This format traditionally favors experience — but this time, there’s enough new talent to challenge that pattern.

Debutant Teams

IEM Cologne 2026 will introduce several organizations to the Major stage for the very first time — each arriving with a different path, but the same objective: to prove they belong at the highest level of Counter-Strike.

Among the debuting teams are SINNERS, Sharks, and THUNDER dOWNUNDER, alongside several lineups that bring fresh cores and new identities into the Major ecosystem. In addition, a number of organizations will receive their first-ever in-game stickers — a milestone that permanently places them in Counter-Strike history.

SINNERS arrive with one of the most stable cores among debutants. Players like beastik, SHOCK, MoDo, kisserek, and stressarN have built their chemistry over time, making them one of the more structured teams starting from Stage 1. Their strength lies not in star power, but in discipline and system — something that can be crucial in BO1-heavy early stages.

Sharks represent a different type of debut. The Brazilian organization returns to the Major conversation with a rebuilt roster and a new identity after their rebrand. With players like gafolo, rdnzao, doc, koala, and maxxkor, they bring aggressive regional playstyle, but still lack consistent experience against top-tier international teams.

Then there is THUNDER dOWNUNDER — arguably the most unusual team at the event. At the time of qualification, they were ranked around top-86 in the world, making them one of the lowest-ranked teams ever to attend a Major. In five months, they played only two matches outside Oceania — losing both. Their presence at Cologne highlights both the opportunities created by the VRS system and the uncertainty of regional representation.

Beyond these teams, several organizations will make their debut through roster changes and new project structures, rather than long-term development. This reflects the current state of CS2, where qualification is no longer only about legacy — but also about timing, rankings, and adaptability.

What unites all debutant teams is the same challenge: transitioning from regional or Tier-2 success into Tier-1 competition.

31 Players, 31 First Stickers

Only 31 players will make their Valve Major debut at IEM Cologne 2026 — a notable number that continues the trend of new talent entering the top level of Counter-Strike. While BLAST.tv Austin Major earlier this year introduced 46 debutants, Cologne still stands out as one of the key events shaping the next generation of CS2.

For many of these players, this is the moment everything has been building toward. Some have spent years grinding through qualifiers, rebuilding after roster changes, and waiting for a breakthrough opportunity. Others arrive much faster, jumping from Tier-2 competition to the Major stage in a matter of months — a reminder that modern Counter-Strike still allows for rapid rises.

Another defining detail is how these debutants are distributed. The majority will start from Stage 1, facing immediate pressure in a BO1-heavy environment, while only a handful reach deeper stages — with just one debutant already placed in Stage 3. This highlights the gap between breaking into the scene and truly establishing yourself at the top level.

Pick’em Impact: Skin.Club Challenge

Debutants play a key role in the Skin.Club Pick’em Challenge. With 31 first-time players at IEM Cologne 2026, early stages become far less predictable — especially in BO1 matches, where inexperience and pressure often lead to upsets. For Pick’em, the rule is simple: Don’t trust debutant-heavy teams for 3-0, but don’t rush to put them 0-3 either.

Use experienced teams as your base, and treat new lineups as high-risk picks. That balance is often what separates average results from higher-tier rewards.
