The IEM Cologne Major 2026 has become the most-watched Counter-Strike 2 tournament in history. During the quarterfinal clash between G2 Esports and Team Spirit, the event reached a peak of 2,044,763 concurrent viewers and broke the previous CS2 record held by PGL Major Copenhagen 2024. Esports Charts confirmed the milestone after one of the most memorable series of the year. Team Spirit defeated G2 2-1, while the deciding Mirage map stretched into quadruple overtime. The audience peaked during the closing rounds, with Spirit eventually winning the map 25-22 to book a place in the semifinals.

PGL Major Copenhagen 2024 previously held the CS2 viewership record. Its grand final between NAVI and FaZe peaked at 1.85 million viewers. Cologne surpassed that mark by more than 190,000 viewers even before the semifinals and grand final.

As a result, IEM Cologne Major 2026 became the most popular tournament since Counter-Strike transitioned to CS2 in September 2023.

The event still sits behind two legendary CS:GO Majors in the all-time rankings. PGL Major Antwerp 2022 reached more than 2.1 million viewers. Meanwhile, PGL Major Stockholm 2021 remains the record holder with more than 2.7 million peak viewers during the grand final between NAVI and G2.

Highest Hours Watched in Counter-Strike history

Viewership peak was not the only milestone achieved in Cologne.

Esports Charts reported that IEM Cologne Major 2026 had already generated the highest Hours Watched total in Counter-Strike history. The tournament reached that achievement before the end of the competition.

The final numbers may rise even further because several high-profile matches still remain on the schedule. The semifinals and grand final are expected to attract enormous audiences.

Community amazed by the numbers

The new record quickly sparked reactions across social media. Many fans highlighted that the tournament reached the milestone during the quarterfinals instead of the final. One user wrote:

Genuinely insane. It’s only the quarterfinals.

Other fans described Counter-Strike as the best esport in history and called the G2 vs Spirit series “cinema.” Some users also pointed out that the Falcons vs Vitality match had not started yet, suggesting even larger numbers could follow. Another fan commented:

2M+ peak viewers for CS2 and it still somehow felt like half of them were losing their mind in the same room. Cologne is just different.

More records could still fall

The tournament still has two days left. Therefore, IEM Cologne Major 2026 may improve its numbers once again. Regardless of what happens next, Cologne has already secured its place in Counter-Strike history. The Cathedral of Counter-Strike continues to prove why it remains one of the most iconic events in esports.
