Team Liquid found themselves in a difficult calendar situation ahead of the upcoming tournaments. The team qualified for the BLAST Bounty 2026 Season 2 Finals, but at the same time had already been listed for a Swedish LAN with a $60,000 prize pool.
The problem is that the tournaments overlap in dates. Because of this, Liquid risk either withdrawing from the LAN event or only making it there if their BLAST run ends quickly. After discussions, the team’s coach flashie explained the situation.
A calendar trap for Liquid
At first glance, the situation looks simple: Liquid have a match against atputies in Stockholm on August 1, while the BLAST Bounty 2026 Season 2 Finals take place from July 30 to August 2. This is exactly what creates the conflict, because the team physically cannot fully prepare for two LAN tournaments at the same time.
The biggest risk is connected not only to the schedule, but also to the ranking consequences. If Liquid cannot arrive for the match against atputies and are forced to withdraw, it may hurt their VRS positions. What makes it especially unpleasant is that the opponent in this match does not have a high ranking status, so a technical loss or withdrawal could look more painful than an ordinary match defeat.
Why Liquid still chose BLAST
flashie explained that the team understood the possible overlap even before the start. But participating in BLAST was strategically more important for Liquid, because it was their only chance to fight for invitations before the August 3 deadline.
According to him:
We knew there could be a conflict between the two tournaments, but participating in BLAST was our only chance to try to secure invites on August 3.
This clearly shows Liquid’s logic: the team accepted the short-term risk with the Swedish LAN for the sake of a potentially more important result in the invitation system.
In other words, Liquid did not simply end up in an inconvenient schedule by accident. They consciously made a bet on BLAST, because this tournament could carry more weight for them in the nearest ranking cutoff.
What happens if Liquid win the quarterfinal
The most interesting part of flashie’s explanation concerns the scenario in which Liquid successfully start at BLAST. He noted that the team will likely play against the first or second seed in Malta, so their match should take place on July 30.
If we win our quarterfinal, we will withdraw from the Stake tournament. This will lead to the loss of some points, but it will only affect our September ranking, because the tournament ends after the invites are already sent out on August 3.
This is the key point. Liquid are effectively ready to sacrifice some future ranking points if BLAST gives them a better position now. In addition, flashie added that no major invite distributions are expected in September, while a quarterfinal victory at BLAST will itself bring the team points.
What happens if Liquid lose
The second scenario is simpler. If Liquid cannot advance further at BLAST, the team plans to immediately switch to the Swedish LAN. flashie explained it directly:
If we are not successful in the quarterfinal, the next day we will fly to Stockholm to be ready for our game on August 1.
In that case, Liquid will keep the chance to play against atputies and avoid the worst-case scenario of withdrawing. But to do that, the team will need to quickly reset after the loss, fly to Sweden, and already play a new match the next day.
Why this matters for the ranking
This story is interesting not only because of the schedule clash itself. It clearly shows how important working with rankings, invite deadlines, and tournament selection has become for teams. Liquid now have to calculate not only prize money or event status, but also exactly when a tournament ends and which ranking its results will count toward.
