The first major surprise of IEM Cologne Major 2026 Stage 1 arrived almost immediately. Brazilian squad Sharks defeated HEROIC 13:10 on Nuke in the opening Swiss-round Bo1, handing the Scandinavian lineup an unexpected loss and instantly damaging thousands of pick’em predictions. Before the match, HEROIC were considered clear favorites thanks to their experience at international LAN events and significantly higher ranking position. Instead, it was Sharks who controlled the key moments and secured one of the biggest upsets of the first round.
Tournament context
Stage 1 of IEM Cologne Major 2026 is played using a Swiss system. All opening-round matches are Best-of-1, making every mistake significantly more costly. Teams that win move into the 1:0 pool and take an important step toward qualification, while losers immediately fall into the 0:1 bracket where pressure rises dramatically.
For HEROIC, this was expected to be one of the more manageable opening matches of the tournament. Sharks entered Cologne ranked outside the top thirty in Valve Regional Standings and arrived as underdogs. However, as Majors repeatedly prove, rankings often matter far less once the matches begin.

How the match unfolded — HEROIC vs Sharks

- Final score: Sharks 13:10 HEROIC
- Map: Nuke
The veto left Nuke as the decider after both teams removed six maps. Sharks immediately looked comfortable on the battleground and managed to build an early advantage. HEROIC stayed within reach and kept the score competitive, but the Brazilians consistently found crucial multi-kill rounds whenever the Scandinavian side threatened a comeback.
The first half ended with Sharks leading 7:5. After switching sides, the Brazilians continued winning important gun rounds and never allowed HEROIC to establish long economic control. Despite several strong individual moments from Yasin “xfl0ud” Koç, HEROIC struggled to find consistency across the lineup.
As the match entered its final rounds, Sharks remained composed and closed the map 13:10, completing one of the earliest surprises of Stage 1.
Player of the Match
The standout performer was Máximo “maxxkor” Cortina, who delivered an excellent all-around performance for Sharks.
Máximo “maxxkor” Cortina (Sharks)
- K-D: 18-12
- ADR: 89.1
- KAST: 82.6%
- Rating 3.0: 1.52
While Daniel “doc” Barros also posted strong numbers with 23 kills and 100.4 ADR, maxxkor’s consistency throughout the map earned him the highest rating of the server and the Player of the Match nomination.
For HEROIC, xfl0ud was the only player to finish with a rating above 1.00, posting a 1.50 rating despite the defeat.
VRS impact

The result also produced noticeable movement in Valve Regional Standings points.
Sharks
- +26 VRS points
- Total: 1352 points
- Ranking change: #34
HEROIC
- -18 VRS points
- Total: 1419 points
- Ranking change: #31
While one Bo1 does not define an entire Major run, every VRS point remains valuable throughout the season, especially for teams fighting for direct invitations to future events.
What’s next?
Sharks advance to the 1:0 pool, where another victory would move them significantly closer to Stage 2 qualification. HEROIC fall into the 0:1 bracket, immediately putting additional pressure on their next match. The team still has plenty of opportunities to recover, but the margin for error is already smaller after an unexpected opening defeat.
