Valve changed Major revenue distribution — VRS will now directly impact team earnings

Valve have officially updated the revenue-sharing system for the Major Shop and Major Pass in Counter-Strike 2. Teams will now receive money based on their global VRS position and final placement at the Major. In simple terms, better results now mean higher earnings for organizations and players. Under the new rules, 50% of all Major Shop and Major Pass revenue will be shared between the tournament organizer, teams, and players. Half of each team’s share goes to the organization. The other half is divided equally between the five players.

VRS now affects revenue before the Major starts

The biggest change is that revenue before the grand final depends on the teams’ global VRS ranking heading into the event. A higher Valve Regional Standings position now directly increases a team’s potential income from sticker sales and the Major Shop.

After the grand final, Valve switch the system to final tournament placements. Teams that make deeper playoff runs or reach the final receive a larger percentage of the total revenue pool. For example:

  • 1st place receives 2.85%
  • 2nd place receives 2.53%
  • 3rd–4th place receive 2.25% each
  • 5th–8th place receive 2.00% each
  • 31st–32nd place receive only 0.72% each

The tournament organizer separately receives 5% of the total distribution.

If you suck, you get less sticker money

The update quickly sparked major discussion across the Counter-Strike community. Many users pointed out that Valve have effectively removed the old system where some teams mainly focused on qualifying for the Major to secure sticker revenue.

Analysts and fans believe the new model will encourage organizations to invest more into results instead of only reaching the tournament. One viral social media comment summarized the situation perfectly:

If you suck you get less sticker money.

At the same time, some fans worry that the new rules could increase the financial gap between Tier-1 organizations and smaller teams. In the past, simply qualifying for a Major already guaranteed huge income. Now, teams finishing near the bottom of the standings will receive much less.

Valve continue making VRS the center of CS2

The update also shows how strongly Valve continue integrating VRS into the Counter-Strike ecosystem. The ranking system already affects Major invites, seeding, and access to top LAN tournaments. Now it also directly impacts the financial side of the scene.

VRS is no longer just a ranking system. It is becoming one of the main economic systems in modern CS2. For organizations, this means strong results throughout the season can now generate much more money long before the Major even begins.
