The first matchday in a group almost always sets not only the tournament pace, but also the psychology of the entire bracket. This is especially noticeable when one team runs over its opponent without giving them a chance, while the other is forced to pull the series through a full decider.

Tournament context

IEM Rio 2026 is played in a group stage format with double-elimination Bo3. In the opening upper-bracket matches, a win moves a team into the upper semi-finals, while a loss immediately sends it to lower round 1, where the margin for error becomes much smaller.

In Group A, the opening slot featured two series at once: Vitality vs RED Canids and G2 vs Gentle Mates. By the end of the day, Vitality and G2 had continued their run through the upper bracket, while RED Canids and Gentle Mates dropped into the lower side of the bracket.

How the match unfolded — Vitality vs RED Canids

Series score: 2:0 in favor of Vitality

  1. Nuke (RED Canids’ pick) — 13:4
Vitality immediately broke the opponent’s game on the enemy pick. The team completely controlled the tempo, did not allow RED Canids to unfold their own script, and very quickly turned the map into a one-sided match.
  2. Overpass (Vitality’s pick) — 13:6
On their own choice, Vitality only reinforced their advantage. RED Canids looked slightly more competitive, but the favorite’s overall structure and individual form once again proved far too strong for the series to gain any real suspense.

  • K–D: 45–18
  • ADR: 121.3
  • Rating 3.0: 2.08

Key contribution: complete individual domination across two maps, maximum impact in shooting duels, and one of the strongest personal performances of the opening day.

VRS results

  1. Vitality — -5 pt → 2085 pt
Despite the win, the team received a negative rating adjustment, but kept first place and started the group confidently.
  2. RED Canids — -5 pt → 1243 pt
The loss comes with a drop in rating points and sends the Brazilian roster into the lower bracket.

How the match unfolded — G2 vs Gentle Mates

Series score: 2:1 in favor of G2

  1. Inferno (Gentle Mates’ pick) — 8:13
G2 entered the series poorly and failed to break the opponent’s pick. Gentle Mates handled the key stretches of the map better and immediately forced the favorite to play from a chasing position.
  2. Mirage (G2’s pick) — 13:8
On their own choice, G2 responded much more confidently. The team stabilized its game, took control of the tempo, and did not allow the opponent to build on the early series advantage.
  3. Overpass (decider) — 13:3
On the deciding map, G2 left no doubts at all. After the more balanced opening two maps, the decider was played entirely under their control, and Gentle Mates could not impose even a short stretch for a comeback.
