A grand final that never truly became close

Despite Spirit entering the final in strong form after eliminating Falcons and MOUZ in the playoffs, the championship series quickly became a showcase of Vitality’s elite structure and individual level.

Spirit selected Mirage to open the final and started with good energy, but Vitality refused to break under pressure. The map remained competitive deep into regulation before Vitality edged it 16-13 behind crucial late-round conversions from ZywOo and ropz.

On Nuke, Spirit again tried to respond, but Vitality’s CT setups completely slowed down donk and company. Once they gained momentum, the French-led side closed the map 13-10 and moved to championship point.

Dust2 was the final blow. Spirit had no answers for Vitality’s pace changes, mid-round calling, or superior aim duels. The map ended 13-5, turning the final map into a one-sided coronation.

Robin “ropz” Kool delivered another superstar performance in a grand final and earned Player of the Match honors. He finished the Bo5 with:

  • 62 kills
  • 93.4 ADR
  • 82.9% KAST
  • 1.38 rating

ropz constantly found opening kills, won difficult clutch situations, and provided the stability that allowed Vitality to dictate the tempo of every map. Mathieu “ZywOo” Herbaut was also brilliant with a 1.36 rating and 59 kills, once again proving why Vitality currently possess the most complete star duo in CS.

Spirit fall short after strong tournament run

Spirit leave Rio as runners-up after an impressive event overall. Their route included wins over Liquid, RED Canids, MOUZ, and Falcons, but in the final they ran into a team operating on another level. donk had moments throughout the series, but Vitality’s preparation clearly focused on limiting his impact. Spirit’s supporting cast also struggled to match the firepower across all three maps.

Community and team reactions

Vitality instantly celebrated the title on social media. ZywOo posted:

IEM RIO CHAMPIONS AND BACK TO BACK GRAND SLAM!!! So proud of the team, incredible feeling.

Vitality’s official account added:

RISING ABOVE AND WRITING CS HISTORY. YOUR FIRST EVER BACK-TO-BACK GRAND SLAM CHAMPIONS.

Spirit responded with class after defeat:

Our IEM Rio 2026 journey is over, we finish as runners-up. Thank you, Brazil.

A new era of dominance

Vitality are no longer just winning tournaments — they are building an era. They now hold the world No.1 ranking, continue stacking trophies, and have become the benchmark every contender must chase. At Rio 2026, Spirit were expected to push them. Instead, Vitality reminded the scene that right now, there is still a gap between contenders and champions.
