One of the creators of Counter-Strike, Minh “Gooseman” Le, has released a public apology video after becoming involved in a controversial cryptocurrency project called GooseCoin. The situation escalated quickly on social media. Traders began promoting a token created in his name. Soon after, accusations of a potential “rug pull” appeared. The debate spread across both the Counter-Strike community and the crypto scene.

How the GooseCoin situation began

According to Le, everything started with a message on X (Twitter). A user contacted him about a cryptocurrency token created using his name. The project existed on a platform where people can launch tokens tied to public figures or causes. The idea behind GooseCoin was simple. Each trade generated a small fee. That fee would go directly to Le as a gesture of appreciation for his work on Counter-Strike.

The developer claimed that many Counter-Strike fans in the crypto community wanted to thank him for helping create the game more than 25 years ago. Le said the offer surprised him.

I was in complete shock at this act of generosity and had a hard time believing it wasn’t a scam.

The creator also told him that similar tokens already existed. Traders understood the risks and treated the system like speculative day-trading. At one point, the developer asked Le to create a crypto wallet. He planned to transfer $11,000 worth of tokens generated through trading fees.

When Le realized the mistake

Le said the situation unfolded very quickly. The coin started trading heavily within hours. At the same time, messages flooded his inbox. Some people supported him. Others criticized the project and warned about possible manipulation. After thinking about it overnight, Le decided he had made a mistake by accepting the money.

The thought of free money intoxicated me so thoroughly that I didn’t see the harm it was doing to my reputation.

He explained that he initially compared the system to crowdfunding or sports betting. Later he understood that his involvement could influence traders and damage his credibility. In the video, he issued a direct apology.

To the people that I’ve disappointed, I sincerely apologize for my actions. It was foolish to think that I had discovered a cheat glitch that would allow me to make easy money.

What will happen to the money

Le confirmed that he will not keep the transaction fees generated by GooseCoin. Instead, he plans to redirect the funds to another project called Grandma Coin. The token was originally created to help a family pay medical bills for a child’s grandmother. If transferring the money there proves impossible, Le said he will donate the funds to charity. He also stressed that he wants no financial connection to GooseCoin going forward.

Gooseman reflects on Counter-Strike

A large part of the video focused on Le’s personal history with Counter-Strike. He left development of the game in 2006. At the time, he believed the game would slowly lose popularity. Instead, Counter-Strike grew into one of the most successful esports titles in history. Le admitted that he avoided the scene for many years.

I was proud of what Counter-Strike became, but there was also a small feeling of regret for walking away from something that later became so successful.

His perspective changed recently. He reconnected with the community and attended the HLTV Awards, where he met players, casters, and fans who thanked him for helping create the game. Those experiences helped him appreciate the Counter-Strike scene again.

Community reaction: support, criticism, and confusion

The GooseCoin controversy triggered strong reactions on social media. Opinions on X (Twitter) quickly split. Some users defended Le and argued that he was manipulated by crypto promoters.

  • Everyone makes mistakes, it’s just a part of life. Please don’t dwell on this and just ignore the people posting negative comments. — Alkem1st
  • I feel bad for you getting manipulated Goose. — BL1nk
  • It’s valid to have mistakes, everything will get sorted out. — Znorux

Others claimed that crypto promoters used Le’s reputation to legitimize the token.

Your problem is thinking they cared about you — they used you. Their coin is worth zero without a public face giving it legitimacy. — Deploriot

There was also strong criticism from people who said they lost money.

  • You’re a complete fraud… Yesterday you supported it and people bought it because of that. — Hasan Emre Okur
  • Didn’t expect a rugpull from you, lost 2 SOL. — bitcom

Some users even shared an older post from Gooseman criticizing crypto promotions.

Oh so they chat you up and try to sell you some crypto… God lame.

Despite the criticism, many fans defended Le and reminded others of his impact on the game.

CS has done more for me than I can ever put into words… thanks to the game you made 25 years ago. — Alkem1st

A turbulent moment for a Counter-Strike legend

The GooseCoin situation has become one of the most unusual controversies involving a historic Counter-Strike figure. Le ended the video with another apology. He also asked the community to remember his work on Counter-Strike rather than this incident.

I hope people won’t remember me as the coin guy.

For now, the situation appears to be stabilizing. Still, the episode shows how quickly crypto projects tied to well-known personalities can turn into controversy.
