The defeat of Team Spirit against Astralis in the quarter-finals of ESL Pro League Season 23 quickly became one of the most discussed topics in the Counter-Strike community. While the match result itself — 0-2 (Dust2 6-13, Ancient 7-13) — was relatively straightforward, the main discussion after the series focused on deeper issues surrounding Spirit’s current form. Many analysts and fans believe the loss was not just a bad series, but another example of the inconsistency that has followed the team in recent months.

One of Spirit’s worst series in two years

The match against Astralis turned into one of Spirit’s weakest performances in recent memory. The Danish side controlled the pace on both maps, while Spirit struggled to find stability on either side of the game.

On Dust2, Astralis quickly seized control with aggressive openings and well-timed retakes. Spirit managed to secure only six rounds as several key players looked unusually quiet. The situation did not improve on Ancient, where Astralis repeatedly punished positional mistakes and controlled the tempo of the game. The map ended 13-7, closing the series in convincing fashion.

The player of the match was Love ‘phzy’ Smidebrant, who delivered an outstanding performance with a 1.76 rating, finishing the series 41-20 with nearly 100 ADR. For Spirit, however, the picture looked far less promising: no player managed to reach a 1.00 rating, while the team’s superstar Danil ‘donk’ Kryshkovets finished the match with a 0.82 rating.

OverDrive: “Spirit sometimes just forget how to play”

Following the match, a comment from analyst Alexey ‘OverDrive’ Biryukov drew significant attention as he described the team’s current state as a recurring structural issue. According to him, Spirit occasionally fall into a strange pattern where the team suddenly loses control of the game even when preparation and confidence appear strong.

Spirit played their worst Bo3 of the last two years. Nothing foreshadowed such a result: they had a high win rate in practice, the mistakes from Kraków had been analyzed in detail, and the team’s morale was high.

But Spirit have this bug. They can suddenly forget how to play — both for everyone and for themselves. The team seems fully focused, but the control disappears, individual mistakes start increasing, and the opponent senses blood.

Spirit are currently in a difficult phase where they need to understand why this happens and how to solve the problem.

The analyst also warned fans against jumping to conclusions about individual players, suggesting that the root of the issue may lie deeper than simply replacing someone in the lineup.

Community reaction: criticism, memes and harsh takes

The loss quickly sparked strong reactions across social media, with many fans discussing the team’s inconsistency and heavy reliance on donk. Some users pointed out that when the young star is not performing at his usual level, the entire team looks significantly weaker:

When donk doesn’t show up they are a tier-2 team.

Others focused on what they believe are psychological issues inside the roster:

Spirit are good, but they clearly have a mental bug when they start losing rounds.

There were also more radical opinions regarding leadership and the team structure:

Without chopper or a proper IGL I hardly believe they have a chance.

Meanwhile, some fans even started speculating about possible roster changes in the future.

A temporary setback or the start of a slump?

Despite the heavy loss, it may still be too early to call it a full crisis. Spirit remain one of the most talented rosters in Counter-Strike and have repeatedly shown their ability to compete with the world’s best teams. However, the series against Astralis once again highlighted a key issue — inconsistency during crucial moments. If the team fails to address this weakness, it could become a serious obstacle in upcoming tournaments. With the next Major still months away, the coming events will reveal whether this defeat was simply a bad day — or the beginning of a deeper decline for Spirit.
