Cologne 2026 stickers spark controversy as German players report capsule restrictions

The Counter-Strike community has started активно обговорювати можливі зміни до системи Major capsules after multiple German players claimed they can no longer purchase sticker capsules or souvenirs through either the in-game store or the Steam Community Market. The discussion exploded on Reddit and X ahead of IEM Cologne 2026, with many users speculating that Valve may eventually replace the traditional capsule system with a new alternative designed to avoid gambling-related legal issues in certain countries.

German players report blocked capsule purchases

The discussion began after a Reddit post titled “Cologne 2026 will no longer have capsules” gained traction inside the CS community. The author claimed that players in Germany are now fully blocked from purchasing capsules and souvenirs through official Valve systems.

According to the post, similar restrictions already existed during the Paris Major, but users could reportedly bypass some limitations through the older “Link system.” This time, however, players claim the restrictions apply both to the in-game store and the Steam Market.

Several German users in the thread confirmed the issue:

I cant buy any capsuels anymore. Neither in game nor steam markt. The only way is float or skinport with p2p trade.

Others argued that the problem may not stop Valve from releasing capsules globally, since the majority of regions remain unaffected.

Just because germany cant buy it dosent mean the rest of the world cant. I 100% sure we will see capsules for cologne.

Still, the debate quickly shifted toward a much bigger topic — whether Valve may eventually move away from capsules entirely if more countries begin introducing stricter gambling regulations.

Community discusses possible replacement systems

The Reddit thread and reactions on X quickly evolved into speculation about what Valve could introduce instead of traditional capsules.

Some users suggested that Valve may revisit direct sticker purchases, similar to the older Pick’Em systems used before Katowice 2019. Others pointed toward the already existing “terminal” and “armory” concepts as potential solutions that avoid randomized gambling mechanics. One community member wrote:

Why bother creating a new system if they could just reintroduce direct purchases for stickers?

Popular CS2 personality Ozzy also commented on the situation, saying he does not expect major changes before Cologne, but believes Valve may eventually need to rethink capsules entirely if legal pressure continues growing across multiple regions.

Skin traders and collectors additionally expressed concerns about how restrictions could impact inventories and the overall sticker market, especially in Germany — traditionally one of Counter-Strike’s strongest regions.

Valve has not officially commented

At the moment, Valve have not released any official statement regarding sticker capsules for IEM Cologne 2026 or broader regional restrictions. Because of that, most of the current discussion remains community speculation rather than confirmed information.

However, the debate highlights a growing concern inside the CS ecosystem: as more countries begin tightening regulations around loot boxes and gambling-like mechanics, Valve may eventually need to adapt one of Counter-Strike’s most profitable cosmetic systems.

Whether that means terminals, direct purchases, armory-style systems, or a completely new approach remains unclear — but the conversation around Cologne 2026 has already become one of the biggest off-server topics in the CS2 community this week.
