The CS2 Reload update doesn’t change how weapons feel — it changes how long you can use them. By reworking reserve ammo and magazine distribution across almost every gun, Valve has quietly shifted the pacing of rounds, reduced room for error, and redefined which weapons thrive in extended fights. This is not a flashy update. But it directly impacts decision-making in every round.
What Changed
The Reload update is not just about ammo numbers — it fundamentally changes how reloading works in CS2. The most important change is that reloading now discards all remaining bullets in the magazine. If you reload early, those bullets are gone. This alone turns reloading from a routine action into a real decision during every round.
At the same time, the way ammo is displayed has been reworked. Instead of a simple bullet count, the game now shows ammunition as magazines, shells, or individual bullets depending on the weapon. There is also a new visual indicator that shows how full your current magazine is, giving players clearer information in the middle of fights. Reserve ammo is now tied to magazine count rather than just a total pool, which reinforces the new system.

All Weapon Changes in the Reload Update
The Reload update touches almost every weapon category in CS2, primarily through reserve ammo redistribution. While some weapons received significant buffs or nerfs, a large portion of the arsenal remains unchanged, reinforcing their current role in the meta.
Pistols
Among pistols, the biggest winners are the CZ-75 and R8 Revolver, both receiving a +50% increase in total ammo. The P250 also gets a noticeable buff (+33%), making it an even stronger eco option.
On the other side, several popular pistols were heavily nerfed. The Five-SeveN loses half of its ammo (−50%), while the Glock-18 (−43%), Dual Berettas (−40%), and Tec-9 (−33%) all see major reductions. The Desert Eagle also takes a hit (−33%), further limiting its spam potential. The USP-S and P2000 remain unchanged, keeping their stable role in pistol rounds.
SMGs
SMGs mostly trend downward in this update. The MP9 is one of the hardest-hit weapons (−40%), significantly reducing its ability to dominate close-range fights. The MP5-SD, MP7, and UMP-45 all receive moderate nerfs (−20%), while the MAC-10 sees a smaller reduction (−8%). The only real winner here is the PP-Bizon, which gets a slight buff (+4%), though it remains a niche choice. The P90 stays unchanged.
Shotgns
Shotguns are largely untouched. The XM1014, Nova, and Sawed-Off remain exactly the same, preserving their current playstyle. The only exception is the MAG-7, which receives a significant nerf (−46%), reducing its effectiveness in holding tight angles and farming close-range kills.

LMGs
Both M249 and Negev are unchanged. These weapons were not part of the ammo rebalance and remain situational picks.
Rifles
Rifles are the biggest winners of the update. The Galil AR receives a massive +40% increase in total ammo, making it far more viable in extended fights. The M4A4 (+25%) and FAMAS (+9%) also benefit, improving CT-side sustainability. However, not all rifles were buffed. The M4A1-S is nerfed (−20%), reducing its long-term impact in rounds. Meanwhile, core weapons like the AK-47, AUG, and SG 553 remain unchanged, maintaining their central role in the meta.
Snipers
Snipers are the biggest losers of the update. Every sniper rifle receives a heavy ammo reduction. The SSG-08 is hit the hardest with a −70% decrease, while the AWP loses over half of its reserve ammo (−57%). The auto-snipers, G3SG1 and SCAR-20, both drop by −45%. This dramatically reduces their ability to spam, hold angles for extended periods, and recover from missed shots.

Why It Matters
This change introduces real consequences to something that used to be automatic. Players can no longer reload freely after every duel without thinking about it. Every early reload now means losing bullets, while delaying it increases the risk of being caught without ammo at a critical moment.

Because of this, reloading becomes part of decision-making rather than a background action. It adds pressure in fights and forces players to be more aware of their current state at all times.
Impact on Gameplay
The update pushes CS2 toward a more controlled and disciplined style. Players are encouraged to take smarter fights instead of relying on constant spraying and frequent reloads. Clutch situations become tighter, as there are fewer “extra bullets” to rely on, and positioning becomes more important since safe reload timings are harder to find.
Weapon identity also becomes clearer, as magazine size and reload timing now directly influence how each gun should be used in real scenarios.
