Matúš “MATYS” Šimko spoke about G2 recovery from illness, the integration of Artem “r1nkle” Moroz and the team chances of winning FISSURE Playground 3 in an interview with 5EPlay after the 2:0 victory over FURIA. The rifler believes G2 can win the tournament, although he expects BETBOOM to be an even tougher opponent in the Semi-final.
G2 RECOVERED AFTER ILLNESS
Several members of G2, including MATYS and the coaching staff, had been sick during the tournament. According to MATYS, the situation improved before the Quarter-final against FURIA, which was reflected in their performance.
I feel much better. I was sick as well, and you could see it in the previous matches. The other players and the coach also got sick one after another, so basically the whole team caught it. But today we were almost fully recovered, and I think you could see that in the game.
G2 defeated FURIA 16:14 on Ancient before dominating Dust2 13:3. MATYS was especially happy to finally beat an opponent that had caused G2 problems in recent meetings.
We played really well today. Of course, not every round was perfect, but that’s normal, we’re human. I think today we were clearly the better team. I’m really happy to beat them again because they gave us a lot of trouble before. I think we lost to them three times in a row, so reaching the Semi-final feels great.
R1NKLE WAS DECISIVE ON DUST2
r1nkle had a difficult Ancient but responded with a much stronger performance on Dust2. MATYS said there was no special adjustment between the maps and praised the AWPer for resetting mentally.
The most important thing was the mental reset, and he did that extremely well. I have to give r1nkle credit. On Dust2, he did exactly what we agreed on in terms of communication and how he should play. On the CT side, his information and support were responsible for maybe 80% of what we achieved. His decisions were very decisive, and he knew exactly what he wanted to do.
MATYS also explained that r1nkle communicates differently from former G2 AWPer Álvaro “SunPayus” García. SunPayus contributed more to macro calling, while r1nkle focuses more heavily on his own tasks and coordinates with the riflers when additional support is needed.
MATYS BELIEVES G2 CAN WIN THE TOURNAMENT
G2 will face BETBOOM in the Semi-final, and MATYS expects the matchup to be more difficult than the Quarter-final against FURIA.
Honestly, I think we can win the tournament. Of course, it’s going to be difficult. BETBOOM are a very strong team, and for me, playing against BETBOOM could even be harder than playing against FURIA. I’m not saying FURIA are weak, but at this event, teams with extremely aggressive individual players are very difficult to face.
The rifler believes G2 can advance if they maintain the level of communication and decision-making they showed against FURIA.
I believe we can get through it. We just need to keep the same form we had today, the same level of communication and decisive calls. I believe we can keep going and win this tournament.
MATYS WILL NEVER THROW AWAY HIS OLD MOUSEPAD
The interview ended with a lighter topic. MATYS confirmed that he still owns the heavily used mousepad that has attracted attention from fans and has no plans to get rid of it.
Of course I still have the old mousepad. It’s kind of an old relic now. I’m never going to throw it away. I think I’ll keep it for the rest of my life because throwing it away would bring bad luck. The new one uses the same material and it’s the same model, it just looks a little different. Hopefully this one lasts another five years.
G2 will now face BETBOOM for a place in the FISSURE Playground 3 Grand Final.
