At least one tracked slur appeared in 17.6% of the Counter-Strike matches analyzed by CS2Tracker, according to data published by the service. The growing dataset currently covers 5,498,808 chat messages from 494,946 players across 224,801 matches.
The results also show that 7% of players who used in-game chat wrote at least one tracked slur, while 2.09% of all analyzed messages contained one. CS2Tracker warns that its database is still being populated and that the system currently counts only exact word matches, meaning disguised spellings and non-English slurs are not included.
More than 5.4 million messages were analyzed
The current CS2Tracker sample includes:
- Messages — 5,498,808
- Players — 494,946
- Matches — 224,801
- Matches containing a tracked slur — 17.6%
- Chatting players who used a tracked slur — 7.0%
- Messages containing a tracked slur — 2.09%
That works out to approximately one tracked slur for every 48 messages in the database. CS2Tracker also found at least one tracked N-word variant in 9.8% of matches, or roughly one in every ten games within the sample.
The service says the numbers refresh every 15 minutes as additional demos are processed, so the exact figures may continue to change.
CS2Tracker only counts exact matches
There are important limitations to the dataset. CS2Tracker says its system currently recognizes exact matches for selected words and does not include deliberately altered spellings or slurs written in languages other than English.
That means the 17.6% figure should be treated specifically as the share of processed matches in which at least one of the tracked terms was detected. It does not represent every possible form of abusive or toxic communication in Counter-Strike.
The same applies to the 7% player figure: it covers players who actually wrote messages in the analyzed chats, rather than 7% of the entire CS2 player base.
CS2Tracker estimates more than 200 million tracked slurs per year
Using its sample, CS2Tracker also produced estimates for the wider CS2 matchmaking population. The service assumes around 26 million monthly players and roughly 400 million competitive matches per year.
Based on those assumptions, the tracker estimates around 204 million messages containing one of its tracked slurs per year. However, CS2Tracker explicitly labels these global figures as estimates rather than directly measured data.
The measured sample is therefore the stronger part of the study: nearly 5.5 million messages and more than 224,000 matches have actually been processed, while the annual totals are projections based on those results.
The project has renewed the discussion around public CS2 chat logs
The new statistics arrive shortly after players discovered that CS2Tracker makes chat messages from processed match demos searchable through individual profiles. That earlier feature had already raised privacy concerns over how easily old in-game messages could be collected and browsed.
The new tracking page has pushed that discussion further by aggregating millions of those messages into broader statistics and public leaderboards. The story has since spread beyond Counter-Strike-focused communities, with Kotaku reporting on the 17.6% figure and the site’s tracking system.
CS2Tracker notes that its collection is still ongoing, meaning the sample size and percentages could change as more match demos are processed.
