One of Counter-Strike’s most recognizable hosts and interviewers, James “Banks” Banks, has revealed that he will not work at IEM Cologne Major 2026. The news immediately sparked a wave of reactions across the community. Many fans described the British presenter as one of the defining voices of major CS events. Banks confirmed his absence through several posts on X after fans noticed he was missing from the official talent lineup.
I was not invited to Cologne, that’s all there is to it. But I’ll be back more hyped than ever for many more events in 2026.
He also explained how much Majors still mean to him.
The Majors are the most important events of the year. To miss it sucks and hurts, but I’ve worked the last nine Majors in a row, all for different organizers.
Community Disappointed by the Decision

Banks’ statement quickly generated hundreds of supportive messages from fans, content creators, and industry figures. One fan wrote:
We need the voice of Counter-Strike in the arena.
Another added:
It’s Cologne’s loss, not yours.
Many users shared memories from their first Majors and personal encounters with Banks. They described him as one of the most recognizable personalities in Counter-Strike history. Several community members also urged Valve and the tournament organizers to reconsider the decision.
Counter-Strike, what are you doing? Invite this man.
Popular content creator Owen joined the discussion as well.
Deserved to go 100%, but time to lock in with the content.

Debate Over Talent Rotation

The announcement also sparked a broader discussion about talent selection at major tournaments. Some fans argued that the scene needs fresh faces and more regular rotation. Others believed Majors should always feature the best people in each role, regardless of experience or longevity. Banks agreed that organizers have started giving more opportunities to new talent in recent years.
The Majors, as the pinnacle of Counter-Strike, should be representative of the best in class for each role and position. In more recent times that hasn’t happened and I’m not just talking about myself. Other talents have been hit by that. I think PGL, for example, did an incredible job of bringing new faces in, BLAST did it a lot this year, and ESL is trying new things too.
He also stressed that he understands how different tournament operators approach talent hiring.
Banks Says Money Was Not the Issue
Some users speculated that contract negotiations caused his absence. Banks quickly rejected those claims. One fan asked whether he had requested a higher fee than usual. His response was direct:
Not at all. I asked for the normal number that was accepted in the past.
Banks also explained that organizers use different hiring models. Some work with long-term contracts, while others assemble talent teams for specific events.
Banks Still Plans to Attend Cologne
Despite missing out on the official broadcast, Banks still hopes to visit Cologne.
I’ll try make an appearance. No tickets though.
He has already announced plans to create exclusive interviews and additional content through his All About Counter-Strike project.
